A Basic FPGA code for zedboard

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

Hello,
I am new to ZedBoard and FPGA. My task is to make a robot using zedboard to control it and using FPGA programming. I was able to write and burn a VHDL program in Spartan 3 board. Now i want to write a basic VHDL code for ZedBoard to blink an led or give a HIGH on one of the pins.
I want to know if it's possible with Zedboard. I have read some documentation and haven't understood much about the board. If the above is possible, is there a tutorial to guide me?

Regards
Saher Maqsood

Even if you only want to use the Programmable Logic (PL) portion of the Zynq device you will need to generate a basic design including a minimal Processing System (PS) to program the clocks and other initial values and, unless you are using JTAG to program the device, you will need to generate a basic First Stage Boot Loader (FSBL) to load the init values and load the PL bitstream. You may want to build your HDL design separately and 'save' it as a custom IP that can be included in the Vivado Block Design along with your basic Zynq PS.

Once you generate your Vivado design you can 'export' the design to the SDK (Software Development Kit). This export will include a ps7_init.tcl that can be used to initialize the Zynq via JTAG and a ps7_init.c and ps7_init.h that can be used to generate the FSBL, along with your bitstream.

There are several good tutorials to get started.

The Avnet Speedway workshops: Developing ZynqRegistered-7000 All Programmable SoC Software (Vivado 2013.3) and Developing ZynqRegistered-7000 All Programmable SoC Hardware (Vivado 2013.3)

The ZedBoard Zynq Concepts, Tools and Techniques tutorial you can download here: http://zedboard.org/support/design/1521/11

as well as several good blogs: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-lgsbmVeytsY3hQdi01elBDZm8/view?pli=1 and
