uzed uart driver installs as mouse driver instead

Hi All,

Sometimes when connecting the uZed (mine is connected to the break out carrier card most of the time) to a computer the device driver for the Silicon Labs CP2104 USB-to-UART installs as a mouse and then the cursor starts jumping around the computer screen and clicking on things. This has happened a number of times on several different computers running windows 7 and windows xp.
Does this happened to anyone else? If so, is there a way to prevent it from happening?

Thanks,

Sam

    Hi Sam,

I have seen this behavior before and have put some research into it.

This forum thread here seems to confirm the same problem comes from a number of CP210x family devices not just the CP2104 on MicroZed:

    http://community.silabs.com/t5/8-bit-MCU/WinXP-thinks-CP2102-is-a-mouse/td-p/76415

From what I have seen, the problem has surfaced most often when my MicroZed application is streaming a high rate of character data out to the console.  While streaming out text, the USB-UART port is enumerated under Windows as a COM port.  That streaming data on the COM port tricks Windows into thinking that you just connected a mouse (remember back to the days when you would plug your serial mouse into a COM port on the back of the PC?) and that is when you start seeing your cursor bounce around the screen.

The forum post I mentioned suggests a way to disable the Windows PNP enumeration but I have not tested that to see if it actually helps avoid the effect you are seeing.

    Regards,

    -Kevin

From my experience, this happens not only for microzed uart, but also for other device using uart, which continuously output text in some intervals.
    .
To avoid this, I have disabled the mouse driver mistakenly detected by Windows OS.
