Petalinux -> image.ub (How to modify rootfs?)

Hi,

I've followed various useful Xilinx Petalinux guides (ug977, ug980) to create a Linux image after importing my hardware description and bitfile. The BOOT.BIN and image.ub are the only two files I needed to copy to the SD card after using petalinux-configure and petalinux-build (also petalinux-package for the BOOT.bin). It's working well now.

I'm trying to make some permanent changes to the root file system. I see in the images/linux folder a lot of files were created, including rootfs.cpio, and zedhed has a very useful guide on how to modify that here:

http://zedboard.org/content/how-modify-run-level-zed-board#comment-10076

But how can I either:

- get that new rootfs.cpio into my image.ub so that the Zedboard will use it, or

- make the board use the rootfs from rootfs.cpio on the SD card instead of the one which I assume is included inside image.ub

    Hi outhud,

My recommendation is that, since you have a PetaLinux project already that is outputting the rootfs into image.ub, you are going to be better of using the PetaLinux tool to add new user space applications and letting the petalinux-build tool do the rest of the packaging for you to get the new pieces into image.ub file.

There are a number of custom userspace scripts and apps that we use in our example designs and if you setup the app Makefile correctly, PetaLinux will take care of building from source and installing into the target rootfs image for you.

Take a look at these examples up on our Github repo:

    https://github.com/Avnet/software/tree/master/petalinux/apps

Thank you for the kind words, but that other post is really just for people looking to directly tinker with the intermediate files.  Your best bet is to leverage your PetaLinux project and let the tools handle all of the dirty work for you.

    Regards,

    -Kevin
