Microzed in a USB device mode

Hello,

I'm starting a project and would like to use a Microzed to send USB messages to a host application on a PC. The host application will register the Microzed as a USB device and will receive USB messages from it in response to toggled switches on the Microzed. Does anyone know if this type of USB mode has been tested on the Microzed? This is for a personal project and I'd like to make sure I invest in a development board that won't cause me unnecessary pain and suffering ; ) I am planning on using Petalinux.

I'm new to USB development and took a stab at the terminology, please let me know if any clarification of my question is needed.

Thanks,
Sam

The modifications required are covered on Sheet 5 of the MicroZed schematic. These changes are also covered in the MicroZed HW User Guide. MicroZed USB PHY is preconfigured for Host Mode operation by default…

What do you mean by "send USB messages"? A USB can act as a device like a disk device, sound card, network device(TCP/IP), or input device(mouse or keyboard). Each of those choices means a different way of communicating. Maybe you could express what you want in terms of communication without what to implement.

    Thanks

Thanks for your response. To clarify I want the Microzed to be a USB input device (like a keyboard) to a external computer.

OK, now I can point you to https://eleccelerator.com/tutorial-about-usb-hid-report-descriptors/ . This web site gives overall details of programming the interface to act as a keyboard. There are several things in setup that help describe the messages you send up to the PC. See if this helps you toward your goals.

The modifications required are covered on Sheet 5 of the MicroZed schematic. These changes are also covered in the MicroZed HW User Guide. MicroZed USB PHY is preconfigured for Host Mode operation by default. The USB PHY can be configured for Device Mode operation through a set of hardware component population options.

To modify MicroZed for operation in USB Device Mode, perform the following hardware changes:

    • Replace R56 with 10K Ohm resistor

    • Remove R50

    • Remove L10 (Not populated by default)

    • Remove C1 (Optional)

    • Remove C3 (Optional)

While not specifically for MicroZed, I have heard of others successfully adapting this project to MicroZed successfully:
