What is the latest minized bsp that works and what petalinux tool version should be used?

I've been chasing around installing all sorts of different versions of each of the bundles mentioned above and I always end up with a broken installation. The image never builds. I'm running on Ubuntu 20.04LTS and it's NOT a VM. As of right now my MiniZed is just a paperweight and I really want to just build a linux image for it so I can start actually working with it.

As of right now I have the petalinux version 2019.2 and I have the so called supported Minized bsp 2019.2 as well. It will not build. I can embed the log file from the build is requested but for now I just want someone to let me know what versions work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers!!

A key requirement for PetaLinux is to make sure you are using a Supported Operating System. You can find the Supported Operating Systems in the "PetaLinux Tools Documentation Reference Guide UG1144." Here's the version for 2019.2 -- www.xilinx.com/.../ug1144-petalinux-tools-reference-guide.pdf

Unfortunately, 20.04LTS is not in the list. I recommend you either change to a supported operating system or change your Xilinx tool version to one that has 20.04LTS as Supported.

    2019.2:

    Ubuntu Linux Workstation/Server 16.04.5, 16.04.6, 18.04.1,18.04.02 (64-bit)

    2021.1:

    Ubuntu Linux  Workstation/Server  16.04.5, 16.04.6, 18.04.1, 18.04.2, 18.04.3, 18.04.4, 18.04.5, 20.04, 20.04.1 (64-bit)

    https://www.xilinx.com/content/dam/xilinx/support/documentation/sw_manuals/xilinx2021_1/ug1144-petalinux-tools-reference-guide.pdf

You'd think it shouldn't matter, but I can tell you from personal experience that it can. I'm not saying that's your problem for sure, but using a Supported OS is the first thing to try.

    Hello,

I believe the PetaLinux build problems you are having is because the Vivado and PetaLinux 2019.2 tools do not support Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.  If you need to stick with PetaLinux 2019.2, and want to still use Ubuntu, you will need to change to Ubuntu v16.04.6 or v18.04.2.  More details can be found in Chapter 2 of the 2019.2 edition of Xilinx UG1144.

Alternatively, if you need to stick with Ubuntu v20.04, then you will need to use the Vivado and PetaLinux 2021.1 tools.  Again, see Chapter 2 of the 2021.1 edition of Xilinx UG1144.

Also, the Ubuntu sub-version matters and is important.  For example, the Ubuntu v20.04.2 or later version is not supported for Vivado and PetaLinux 2021.1.

To identify the supported OS versions for the Vivado tools please see the version-specific version of Vivado 2019.2 Xilinx UG973 and Vivado 2021.1 Xilinx UG973.

A PetaLinux 2021.1 BSP for the MiniZed can be found at avnet.me/zedsupport in the 2021.1 -> BSP folder.

So thanks for your answers. I'll have a look at how I can ensure I have a matching environment. Unfortunately it is obvious this development environment is very VM centric. My network here at slashdevslashnull.org is all Linux based. I keep it all up to date with the latest patches so as to ensure proper security etc...

So my environment is at the latest supported 20.04.4 LTS and I'm not about to downgrade it. If I was using the VM's I could just load one and go. I'll have to check out my options going forward but it would appear that Xlinx FPGA development will be placed on hold for now.

    Cheers!!

    An Update:

So I did do a last attempt in which I used petalinux 2021.1 toolset and the corresponding BSP file all installed on my Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS . I was able to compile with:

    petalinux-build -c petalinux-image-minimal

So now I do have an image but it's untested. I'll find the documentation to see how to load the image and also check to see if I built the correct component. I've seen some posts that mention the component should be (after 2020) avnet-image-full.

Once I know that I can load the image and watch the smoke escape from the board I'll be good to go.

Once again, thanks for the help and advice.

    Cheers!!
