Custom UART module on Zedboard

sheldonjawline
sheldonjawline over 6 years ago

Hey guys, I have a zedboard here and I would like to play around with its FPGA, so I decided to implement a UART module (as seen on Pong Chu's book), but nothing in this earth lets me know how to make the TX and RX pins external. Snooping around I found out that it might be possible to use the usb-uart pins through EMIO, but I don't know how and couldn't find it either. Can someone give me a hand? I know that the PS has easy access to the UART, but I want to make the whole design PL exclusive.

Thanks in advance

    Hi Sheldon,

You will need to make your PS pins accessible to the PL by routing them to the PL using the EMIO pins. After making them EMIO and saving your configurations right click on the uart pins in the block design and select make external. After making them emio and external you will have to write constraints to send them to the correct pins your external uart device is targeting.

Note: Some of the reference above target old tools.
