Dimensions for custom board area on Microzed FMC Carrier Card

Hi all,

I noticed some other people have also had trouble finding the dimensions of the mounting holes on the FMC part of the carrier card. I've requested the gerbers or dimensions from Avnet and am hopeful that will be able to help.

My question is with regards to the appropriate board size I should make the custom carrier card which plugs into the Microzed FMC carrier card. Does anyone have an idea what the dimensions should be for clearance?

Thanks,

Sam

There is a mechanical drawing and a 3D STEP model of the MicroZed FMC Carrier card posted here if that helps:

    Thanks for the reply,

The step model is helpful but I cannot get the dimensions from it... might be to-do with the freeware reader I am using. The mechanical drawing does not have the dimensions for the mounting holes I'm interested in...

Maybe this will save someone a few minutes,

I derived the outline of the board area for connecting to the FMC connector to be about 2.4"x3.01"
It is possible to have a wider board area but there are some clearance issues that need to be accounted for

    Hi Sam,

If you are looking to make your own FMC board for commercial purposes it is strongly advised to obtain the VITA 57 specification documentation which covers the standards to be followed when designing FMC carriers and modules.

Within the specification there are rules and guidelines around the mechanical requirements for FMC cards.  If you are not making a commercial board, you might want to look at some of the other FMC card designs to see if you can simply leverage the connector geometry and board outline for your project.

    Hi Kevin,

I'm looking to make my own carrier card to mate with the FMC carrier card that Avnet provides. I want to stick with the Avnet Carrier card for now because I know it's done correctly and they've taken care of powering the PL IO's for me on the uZed. The custom board I am working on has a 12 bit parallel interface ADC I will rout to the FMC connector which mates with the FMC connector on the Avnet board.
Does this sound like a good strategy to you?

    Thanks,

    Sam

My wording might be a bit confusing. For clarity, the first time I use the term carrier card above I probably should say custom board. I'm referring to the custom board I will mate with the FMC carrier card that Avnet provides

    Hi Sam,

What is sounds like you are trying to do is to create your own FMC module to plug into the FMC expansion port of the Avnet MicroZed.  What I am suggesting is that you start with an existing FMC board mechanical design files and rip up the electrical circuitry off that board and put down your own circuitry that is tailored to your application.

If you are working with Altium Designer for your board design, you can contact your local Avnet or Silica FAE and request the layout files for the FMC carrier as well as one of our FMC modules like this FMC-IMAGEON module to jumpstart your hardware design.

Thank you Kevin, very helpful advice. I'll slow down on the schematic I'm making and check out my options as you've detailed.

    Kevin,

I've requested the layout files from my Avnet FAE who put in a request. Hoping to get my hands on the layout, I like the strategy that you've proposed.

Has anyone else had any luck getting this or similar layout files? I need to make progress and am wondering how promptly I can expect or not expect to here back about the layout files.
There is an IT issue and I cannot connect to the Avnet express website from my companies server until it is resolved. It's making research on this rather difficult.

    Best,

    Sam
