Is my microzed DOA?

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

Hi All,

I recently received a Microzed SOM, but can't get any sign of life from the USB UART, which would suggest to me a power problem??

I must have made a mistake ordering the thing from AVNetExpress, because it didnt include the pre loaded SD card, cable and Xilinx licence. (is there a way to apply for this by the way?).

Also the boot jumpers were not populated, but there are what look like surface mount jumpers preset to QSPI mode. Should I remove these before soldering in some headers?

Many Thanks in advance.

Ben

Sounds like what you ordered is the one of the MicroZed 'Cost Optimized' SOMs ( AES-Z7MB-7Z0x0-C01-x-G  ), which is designed to work only with a Carrier Card of some sort and is not powered from the USB UART connector as the other MicroZed versions are.

There are three basic ways to order a MicroZed:

    1. The MicroZed Evaluation Kit, which comes with a 7010, commercial temp version of the SOM (System On Module) along with a license voucher, cables, and a microSD card. I would note that the microSD card is not pre-loaded but you can download the image from the microzed.org site. AES-Z7MB-7Z010-G

    2. A MicroZed SOM that comes with only the SOM (no license voucher, cables, or microSD Card). This is available in four versions covering 7010 and 7020 versions with both Commercial and Industrial temp options. AES-Z7MB-7Z0x0-SOM-G or AES-Z7MB-7Z0x0-SOM-I-G

    3. The Cost Optimized MicroZed SOM which, like the MicroZed SOM, comes in the four versions and has no cables, voucher or microSD card. This version costs a little less and is intended for production where the customer is going to operate only in a carrier card environment where power is supplied by the carrier card as well as the JTAG connections. The boot options are fixed as well as a couple of other changes such as no user LED and push button. AES-Z7MB-7Z0x0-C01-x-G

All of the MicroZed versions are covered under the free Xilinx Vivado Webpack version. The free Webpack version does not include the Vivado Analyzer (ISE Chipscope) option. So, if you plan to user your MicroZed on a Carrier Card and do not need the Vivado Analyzer option you should be OK with your current board and have saved some money. You can remove the boot option shunts and replace with a header if you wish. If what you need is a standard 'stand alone' MicroZed SOM, and possibly a license voucher, then you will need to contact Avnet Express for an exchange.
