Mini-ITX heatsink

How is the heatsink attached on the mini-itx board?  Is the fan loud?  Can it be removed and replaced by something else if desired?

    Hi jclemmer,

Check out the Mini-ITX User Guide:

    http://microzed.org/sites/default/files/documentations/Zynq%20Mini-ITX%20Development%20Board%20User%20Guide%20v1_1_0.pdf

Section 2.16 regarding Thermal Management shows "A Cool Innovations heat sink (PN: 3-121202UBFA) and a Sunon 12V fan (PN: MC30101V1-000U-A99) are assembled together and shipped with the the Zynq Mini-ITX Development Kit."

As for how noisy the fan is, Sunon makes some of the quietest fans for the air flow rating.  That being said, the fan is definitely not silent.  I would suggest consulting the Sunon literature for noise rating information:

    http://www.sunon.com/uFiles/file/03_products/08-catalog%20download/Sunon%20DC%20Brushless%20Fan%20&%20Blower_%28190-E%29.pdf

On my Mini-ITX, the fan is attached to the Zynq device using a thermal adhesive and I have removed one in the past without damaging the SoC.

I also recommend reading through the rest of the Thermal Management section in the Zynq Mini-ITX User Guide to better understand the thermal management requirements.  Depending upon your requirements, you may be able to get away with a less aggressive cooling solution.

    Regards,

    -Kevin
