Murata 1DX wireless radio with PicoZed

I want to add Wifi to my PicoZed.  I started by buying the WiLink8 protoboard from TI, and the WiLink8 PMOD adaptor from Avent, before finding posts that recommended using the Murata 1DX PMOD instead.  I'm about to order the Murata radio, but have a couple questions first.

I'll be using a PicoZed Z7030 rev C, PetaLinux 2017.4, and an FMC V2.

1. Will I need to make an adaptor cable as described in this forum post by bnewlin: http://zedboard.org/content/steps-get-wlink8-working-using-petalinux-picozed?   It looks like the Murata and TI PMODs have the same pinout. The FMC V2 has a different pin mapping from the PS PMOD to the Z7030 than the MicroZed does, and that would make the adapter cable necessary.

2. The 1DX has an errata that changes some resistors.  Do I need to implement that errata? Will it be done by Avnet if I purchase a board in the next couple weeks?

3. The SDIO hard block in the PS subsystem is routed to either the emmc on the SOM, or the PMOD on the carrier.  To select the PMOD, I need to change the jumper JT5 on the SOM.  Do I need to change JT6 or any of the other jumpers?

Thanks in advance

-Tyler

    Hello Tyler,

    Happy to help!

    1. This issue highlights an issue that was present in using the PicoZed FMC V1 Carrier Card. So long as your using the FMC V2 carrier card you will not need to make a custom cable

    2. You will not have to implement this errata. This rework will already be done for you. Looking at the FMC V2 it does not appear this rework would be nessecary to begin with as the Pmod interfaces appear to have native 3.3V and does not need a level translator.

    3. What Rev of PicoZed SOM are you using? In earlier revisions of SOMs we used a MUX to allow access to both the PMOD interface and eMMC without requiring a HW change. However in the latest revision we removed this due to performance issues seen on the eMMC interface. An easy way to tell what version you have is the your PicoZed SOM Black? If so then you have a version that has the mux removed. If you have a Red PicoZed SOM the Mux is present.

If your intentions to just use the PMOD and no eMMC, my suggestion would be to do a Hardware change regardless of version of SOM you are using.

To do so on the RED SOM, you would modify JT5 to pins 2-3. In your case using the Murata Pmod, it would be suggested to modify jt6 to position 2-3 also to ensure that a full 8-bit peripheral can be connected through the JX2 MIO interface

To do so on a Black SOM you will need to move JT15, JT10, JT12, JT14, JT11, and JT13 to pins 2-3

    Thanks,

    Josh

    Thanks Josh!

I'm using the red SOM (HW rev C), so I'll move the jumpers JT5 and JT6.

Is the Murata radio still recommended over the TI Wilink 8?  Are both drivers included in PetaLinux 2017.4?

    Hello Tyler,

We at Avnet recommend the Murata radio due to the level of support we can offer behind that module. Any support for the TI Wilink 8 will need to be done through TI. I don't believe they are in the Petalinux BSPs by default. Please refer to this forum post with information in how to generate your own BSP with the following drivers http://zedboard.org/content/adding-wi-fi-and-bluetooth-connectivity-zedboard-using-murata-1dx-pmod
