SDR modem/RF spec details

Former Member
Former Member over 9 years ago

Hello,

I have the following questions:

* What are the modem modulations available on this unit? Will it do higher order modulations such as 256QAM?

* What is the peak data rate?

* What is the Tx output power available at the RF ports in general?

* As for the PA on the development kit, what is the frequency range and output power? Are there different PA modules available for narrower frequency ranges?

Thanks,
Eric

Aside from technical details, I would like to understand the AVNET business model. It is not clear whether AVNET is interested in selling prototypes or boards in large quantities. I would like to have a brief discussion on this. Please send contact information to our general email, info@solectek.com. Thanks.

    Hi Eric,

As with all Avnet system-on-modules (SOMs), they are designed for deployment in end products, therefore we expect that people will buy them in production quantities.  Towards that end, we create carrier boards to provide a fast prototype platform for these SOMs.  Most people design a custom carrier card, purchase SOMs from Avnet, and integrate them into their end product.

All Avnet branches are able to provide quotes and delivery information on our SOMs.  Please send me a private message with your contact info, including location, and I'll connect you with a branch.

    Thanks for your interest!

    -Matt

    Matt,
Thanks for the information. Yes, I would like to get in contact with the local rep. How do I send you a private message?

You wanted to know whether the modem (baseband) code is something that is loaded on the SOM or user supplied on the carrier board?  Do you package the modem (something like GNU radio) for customers or leave it to the customer?

For an embedded implementation, the baseband code is something you provide and execute on the Zynq SoC that resides on the SOM itself.  The carrier card is used only to supply power to the SOM and provide the physical interface to Ethernet, USB, SFP+, PCIe, etc.  For development we also support what is typically called "radio in the loop", where waveforms are sent/received on a host PC and transferred over Gigabit Ethernet.  MathWorks support this today on PicoZed SDR -- http://www.mathworks.com/hardware-support/zynq-sdr.html

GNU Radio is also supported.  It is comes pre-installed on the Analog Devices SD card image that ships with the PicoZed SDR Dev Kit.  More info here -- https://wiki.analog.com/resources/tools-software/linux-software/gnuradio

    Hope that helps.

    /Matt

    Matt,

You mentioned that GNU radio is pre-installed in the SD card image. Questions related to that are:

    * I assume that the code is compiled and is ready for use by customers, i.e. basic radio operations can be easily verified. Please let me know if otherwise.

    * I am not sure if you have made changes to GNU radio to make it work with the picozed platform. If you have, would you have changes in source code available to your customers? That would certainly be very helpful to get things done quickly.

The ADI code is published for download/cloning on their GitHub repository:
