Avnet XRF8 Gen3 SOM Thermal Requirements

jake8jensen

I’m reaching out to inquire about the thermal management requirements of the XRF8 Gen3 SOM. We plan to use the XRF Heatsink V2 (AES-XRF-HEATSINK-V2) with the AES-XRF-HEATSINK-V2-FAN. However, we intend to operate at altitudes up to 20kft where there is a reduction in convective cooling. What is the maximum allowable heatsink temperature that will insure SOM performance?

Hi, I have no idea (other than checking the component datasheet for the device the heatsink is attached to and seeing if the heatsink thermal info is documented somewhere), but just so that you have a response until something better arrives; there's a reference to an e-mail address in the documentation (screenshot below). Probably you've already e-mailed that though.

I'm no expert but if it were me, I would not be relying on that puny little fan at that altitude.

It would be better to implement cooling for the system (i.e. inside its enclosure) with more than one fan or blower, positioned to suit the board and the enclosure layout as a system, and design in an altimeter circuit, so the fan speed is ramped up at those elevations.
