U-boot QSPI read speed

I have built an design for the Zedboard that boots Linux from the QSPI flash. The loading time for my 8 MB ramdisk image is 26 seconds which would give a bandwidth of about 300kB/s which seems to be very slow. The SD card boots in a couple of seconds and according to what I've read the QSPI should be faster. Any thoughts of what speed to expect or any ideas of where to tweak to increase the speed of the QSPI flash read operation?

I can add that the version of the U-boot is 2014.01 and I am using vivado 2014.2. When i do the same read operation in Linux after boot using cp /dev/mtdX the read time is a third of the u-boot read time.
