GNURadio (3.7+) on MicroZed

Has anyone successfully be able to port a recent version of GNURadio (3.7 or greater) to the MicroZed?

I've been able to use the Architech SDK as seen in the sticky post at the top of "Software Application Development" to build a generic minimal OpenEmbedded/Yocto Linux image by following their walkthrough... but I'm not a software engineer by any means.

I'm still pretty confused about the Architech software architecture (and OE / yocto in general), and it seems they refer to a set of possible "Board Support Packages" that might be different from the "BSP" that I'm used to (created in Xilinx tools).

I found there was a pre-generated Linux image already for the ZedBoard out there, but not for the MicroZed.

I also found someone who successfully got an image built for the MicroZed that includes GNURadio, but this was in 2013, and is pretty old.

Any help?

Have you taken a look at the material on the ADI Wiki yet?

I know that GNURadio is part of the SD card image that they ship for the ZedBoard SDR Kit II.

Since they are running Ubuntu Desktop on ZedBoard, they also do the native compile of GNURadio ON ZedBoard using built in GCC for ARM. If you are just doing experimentation, then this might be the easiest way to go.

I'll give that a go! Do you know if I can mount an sd card that's meant for the zedboard on the microzed without problems or breaking anything?

Hi Rich,

The only thing on the SD card that would need to be different for MicroZed is the BOOT.BIN file to boot the system. The BOOT.BIN contains the FSBL (boot loader) and Bitstream (Programmable Logic implementation). Once you are able to re-target those two pieces for MicroZed, everything else on that SD card should work okay for MicroZed.

There are lots of instructions on the ADI Wiki for building each component of the SD card from source code.

Also, keep in mind that not all MicroZed Carriers have HDMI output so you won't see Ubuntu desktop without that hardware available.
