Power Adapter for ultra96 v2

akakkel211s
akakkel211s over 4 years ago

Hello,
I have just ordered AES-ULTRA96-V2 board and I didn't know that the power adapter is not supplied with it. I found an adapter which supplies 12V 2A, is it sufficient for the board ? I saw that the website has 12V 4A adapter.

Thank you for the responses in advance

For many uses the 2A power supply for the Ultra96-V2 will be fine, but any applications that make heavy use of the PL (FPGA) section of the Zynq MPSoC device will need the 4A supply. I would recommend…

If you don't buy the Avnet supply, then be careful that you buy one with the correct barrel jack since the 96Boards standard is not a common one (4.75mm OD / 1.7mm ID). If you already have a 5.5/2.1, then 96Boards does offer some adapters -- https://www.96boards.org/product/power/

I definitely recommend getting the 4A Avnet-recommended supply. That's what all of us use, and we know it works. It is in stock and costs around $20.

Another key accessory that you might want to consider is the JTAG/UART Pod, especially if you are already placing an additional order.

    Hello,

The adapter seems like coming from US store so it will take time to arrive. In the meantime I found a charger which has 4.8 x 1.7mm center positive plug. Will it work or the 0.05mm outer diameter cause issues ?

    Thank you

A plug with a 4.8mm OD and 1.7mm ID is *likely* to fit in the Ultra96-V2, but not guaranteed.  I would not expect the 0.05mm OD difference to be significant.  You will need to experiment, though.

Yes, I agree with Tom that it will likely work.

Did you end up buying through Farnell? I'm surprised it wasn't in stock and had to ship from US.

    Hello,
Thank you all for the replies I ended up buying the original charger from the AVNET and it works perfectly fine.

    One out of topic question:

In order to shutdown the board I hold the SW4 for about 10-15s and it shuts down but is this the proper way to shut down the board ? Do I need to type anything to command window before shutting it down ?

    Thank you again

If you are running the Linux OS image from our PetaLinux BSP (Updated Designed By Avnet BSP & Platforms for v2020.2 tools, the clutter reduction edition!) then either a button press of SW4 or entering the Linux 'poweroff' command will properly shutdown Linux and tell the PMU firmware to poweroff the board.  If you are using a different Linux OS image then you will need to enter the 'poweroff' command and then manually press the SW4 switch for 10-15 seconds for a proper poweroff.  This is to make sure that Linux closes all open files and halts all tasks before power is removed.  Otherwise the filesystem on the SD card could become corrupted.
