Ultra96-V2 getting started guide issues

kvnmrls
kvnmrls over 5 years ago

I've been using the Ultra96-V2 Getting Started Guide Version 1.1 to get started with the board and I'm running into some issues and some questions.

Issue: No display when powering up and connecting the board to a display.
- the display is an AOC U2879VF
- the adapter is an active miniDP to HDMI (Amazon link : Cable Matters Active Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (Active Mini DP to HDMI) Supporting Eyefinity Technology 4K Resolution)
- I've already flashed the included SD card with this image (ultra96v2_oob_2018_3_190917_8GB.zip) as detailed in the guide Ultra96-V2: Write the microSD Card Factory Image

- I'm powering the device with 12V 4A power supply mentioned in the guide

Questions:

- Does the image size have to be 16,022,241,280 bytes large as mentioned in the microSD card guide? I've downloaded the zip file containing the image and guide and extracted the files and the image is only 7,782,400 KB.

- Do I need the Ultra96 USB-to-JTAG/UART Pod that is mentioned in the guide to complete the guide? Do i need it to view the Display output?

- Is there another guide that only uses the display port to get started?

The ultra96v2_oob_2018_3_190917_8GB image was created from an 8GB microSD card purposely so it would fit on any 16GB card out there. The original problem with the 16GB image created from the included Delkin 16GB card was that it was slightly bigger than many other 16GB cards out there, which then caused those other cards to fail during imaging. That's when we started posted the 8GB image, which leaves part of the 16GB card unused, but it consistently works.

You do not need the USB-to-JTAG/UART Pod for the Ultra96-V2 to boot or view the DisplayPort output. You can also use the Access Point to connect wirelessly to the board. However, the Pod is very useful since you are able to see the boot process while it is happening. If you plan on doing any JTAG boot or debug down the road, you will need one eventually.

You could be having a problem with either your active adapter or the monitor. I am not aware of anyone else using the active adapter that you call out. You can view this post for additional things that people have tried successfully.

I am also not aware if the monitor you are using will work. The Ultra96-V2 has the same DisplayPort circuit as the ZCU102. You can search "ZCU102 Supported Monitors" to find monitors that have been successfully used.

Having looked at your monitor online, I suspect the problem is your Active Adapter. Since your monitor has a DisplayPort input, why not use that? You would need to find a mini displayport to displayport cable. From what I have heard from many users, the DisplayPort option is much more reliable than HDMI.

    Hi Bryan,

Thanks for answering my question. I suppose I'll have to try yet another active adapter. Honestly, the board is breaking my wallet with all the additional cables needed. There should be an updated guide to reflect how to start up the Ultra96- V2 without the JTAG/UART pod, as well as list of recommended cables, monitors, power supplies.

    I personally use this adapter:

    CableCreation Product Number CD0095

Active Mini DP to HDMI, CableCreation 6 Feet Mini DisplayPort (DP1.2) to HDMI Cable, DP to HDMI, 4K X 2K & 3D Audio/Video, Eyefinity Multi-Screen Support, 1.8 Meters/Black

    Amazon Link: http://a.co/d/i5EiEKn

However, the particular adapter that you purchased is supposed to work. My colleague did test that adapter with a monitor recommended by Xilinx.

I'm using an old 43" TV that I got on black Friday a few years ago -- Element Electronics ELEFT436, so I'm not using a fancy monitor.

You can get more information directly from Xilinx related to the supported adapters/monitors.

    https://www.xilinx.com/support/answers/67462.html

    https://www.xilinx.com/support/answers/68671.html

Your best bet is to use a native DisplayPort monitor.

Sorry for your trouble, and thanks for the feedback.

Benfei 000117black-MDP-A Mini-DP to HDMI Active adapter works with Element Electronics ELEFT436 43" TV Monitor HDMI input.

This adapter is only $11.99 (as of 5/8/2020) and is the least expensive adapter I have found to work.

My company just purchased two Ultra96v2 boards for zynq development.  I, too am unable to get the display port video to display anything using the below mini-dp to hdmi cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00YONKZ72/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1   We've tried 4 different monitors.

i've just ordered two of the suggested mini-dp to hdmi adapters.

Regarding mini-dp to hdmi cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00YONKZ72/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Notice the absence of the word "Active" in the title or description. If it's not an Active cable, it definitely will not work. If it is Active, then some will work.

By far, the best choice is to purchase one of the recommended DisplayPort monitors and use an Mini-DP to DP cable.

The alternative is to use an Active Mini-DP to HDMI adapter from this page:
