Documentation links in Vitis 2021.1 not working

Andrew J
Andrew J 10 months ago

When I look at a BSP for a platform in Vitis, I can see a list of drivers, against which are entries for 'Documentation Link' and 'Import Example'.  There's also a 'Documentation' link for the Operating System (in my case, standalone 7.5).  See the screenshot which shows these links.

When I hover the cursor over the documentation links, it indicates it's an active link but clicking does nothing - I'm expecting an HTML document to open.  Import Examples works ok.  Is there some preference I need to set somewhere for these to work?

When I click on the psu_pgio_0 Documentation Link in Vitis, it does pop open a browser tab in Chrome at

    file:/C:/Xilinx/Vitis/2021.1/data/embeddedsw/XilinxProcessorIPLib/drivers/gpiops_v3_9/doc/html/api…

I kept the default installation path, so that makes sense. Plus, this is Windows, so that might be different. I did not do anything special to set up the linkage between Vitis and my browser.

However, you can review what things are set to. In Vitis, select Windows > Preferences. Then go to Additional > General > Web Browser. Maybe you can manipulate that. I think perhaps the actual location of the documentation is hard-coded based on the setting for your Installation Repo, which you can find in that same Preferences window under Xilinx > Software Repositories > Installation Repositories.

Since the question you ask is very specific to the Xilinx tools, I recommend cross-posting to the Xilinx Forums as well at https://forums.xilinx.com/ . If you figure it out, please share!

    Thanks Bryan.

I'd tried with the browser preferences but it didn't make any difference.  The Installation Repository is /Xilinx/Vitis/2021.1/data/embeddedsw/ which matches your path - I can't add anything else into that preference.  The file you refer to in your link exists within the same sub directory of the installation repository so there's clearly something about the documentation link that isn't finding that file.  Unfortunately Eclipse doesn't show the actual link reference which would help.

Ok, so I found the issue.  Eclipse/Firefox combination uses something called libwebkitgtk2 and the current version, v4, does not support browsers.

This from Eclipse's error log when I navigate to the Web Browser preference:

!MESSAGE Internal browser is not available: No more handles because there is no underlying browser available.

Please ensure that WebKit with its GTK 3.x bindings is installed (WebKit2 API level is preferred). Additionally, please note that GTK4 does not currently have Browser support.

In other words, Firefox and Eclipse are doomed not to work - I couldn't find V3 of the GTK to install as the apt package manager said it was a virtual package and not installable.  Frankly, I couldn't be bothered to spend more time on working this out so installed Chrome instead.  That works a treat.

So not specifically an issue with Vitis but Eclipse.
