UltraZed-EG + IOCC Power Usage Question

jjjjcol
jjjjcol over 4 years ago

According to my cheap outlet power meter, an UltraZed-EG+IOCC booted to the demo petalinux prompt draws 7.9W from the wall (with nothing but the console USB connected).  Loading each core to 100% adds an additional 0.2W/each.  Brining up 1000Base-T adds 0.4W

Can anyone guess where most of that 7.9W is going?  When I use the Xilinx power estimator I can't get a number higher than ~3W, so either I am using that tool incorrectly or the majority of the power is used by peripherals.

    Hi Jay,

If you are really interested in looking at the power characteristics associated with the UltraZed-EG and IOCC I'd reccomend you get an infineon PowIRCenter GUI dongle - https://www.newark.com/infineon/usb005/digital-ctrl-interface-dongle/dp/36AJ4583?CMP=AFC-OP

This dongle when connected to J10 on your IOCC provides full power monitoring of your system using the PowIRCenter GUI from Infineon. This is utilizing the PMBUS architecture supported in the Infineon PMICs used on the board.

One thing of note is with thing dongle it is possible to update the firmware in these PMICs, please be careful to not commit any new firmware updates as this has the potential to brick your board.

For reference, this is the output of the Ultra96-V2 when using the dongle, you can see the current and voltage outputs of each rail in real time.

    Thanks Joshua, that's really cool

Its interesting that your test measurement came out to about 3W on the Ultra96-V2.  As far as I can tell that unit has similar specs to the UltraZed-EG

Seems like its a complicated enough thing that the power management interface is a must.

    Thanks again
