UltraZed-EV starter kit - Touch Screen Display Interface Options

I am using the UltraZed-EV starter kit, serial number AES-ZU7EV-1-SK-G, which includes the UltraZed-EV SOM and UltraZed-EV Carrier Card. One of my goals is to choose an appropriate touch screen display module (ideally PCAP touch with TFT Display) that will work with the SOM and Carrier Card included in this kit. I need to display graphics on the display (graphs, wire frame models (3D and 2D), data sets, log files, GUI, and be able to utilize the touch input to select options such as starting a test, entering into different menus, typing on a touch keypad, zooming in/ out of and panning around a 3D/ 2D model, etc. The SOM/ Carrier Card supports various "display mode" options. I am trying to choose the best one for our application, which should provide a fast refresh rate/ response time to display and touch, and provide a reliable connection (minimal EMI for example). I noticed the SOM has capability for DisplayPort (sourcing the display only) as well as LVDS for touch input, and the carrier card supports both of these. Ideally these would be the two options I would select.

My question is, can Display AND Touch Screen control be accomplished through LVDS, or do I need to find a touch screen display module that has DisplayPort for display and LVDS for touch screen control?

Also, is it correct to say the Carrier Card/ SOM does not have I2C interface to use for touch control?

I will also take other recommendations for selecting an appropriate Touch Screen Display module that will work with this start kit and will be quick and reliable with minimal interference.

As far as I know, the LVDS signaling standard is used for smaller resolution LCD display panels. We have used these in the past on Xilinx Zynq-7000 based kits since there was no dedicated DisplayPort controller like you find today on Zynq UltraScale+ family. I don't know of any LVDS touch controllers as these typically use UART, I2C, or USB interfaces from the Host to the touch controller.

It is possible to hook up I2C touch screen controllers on the Linux side. It can be a lot of work to get this going however.

The easiest solution is to use a USB touch screen as those usually are enumerated as a pointer type device (like a mouse).

Unfortunately, I do not have either GeChic display to test here and comment on the performance of the touch display but I have seen the 1303H display-only version working fine with our UltraZed kits but I do not have access to a 1303i for testing the touch.

We are considering trying two touch screen displays with resolutions of 1024 X 768 and 1280 X 800. Do you know if the UltraZed-EV will be able to perform the DisplayPort output at these resolutions? Also, is there any documentation you can provide that would show how to set up the DisplayPort for different video resolutions?

Hi Marshall,

Sorry for the late reply on this. If you are planning to use the DisplayPort interface with Linux running on your UltraZed-EV, then the EEID EEPROM on your display will report the resolution 1024x768 or 1280x800 back to Linux and then the Linux DRM will size the output resolution of the DisplayPort interface to match that of the display panel as closely as possible.

Does anyone has any luck using TFT Display with ltrascale+ mpsoc ?
We are using DRM/DisplayPort and MegaChip STDP4020 to convert DP to TTL/LVDS. Regarding EDID for TFT, we are configuring Linux to get EDID from a file.
We are still trying to make it work.

Is there a specific reason you need to convert to TFT? Can you just use the DP output?
