Vitis 2020.2 Installlation and the Avnet Zedboard

Dear Sir:

        I am in the process of installing Vitis 2020.2 running on Ubuntu 20.04.    I took notice of the "embedded images" that may be required for Vitis 2020.2 to operate correctly.   Please see the link below for reference.

https://www.xilinx.com/support/download/index.html/content/xilinx/en/downloadNav/embedded-platforms.html

        Can anyone tell me if the Avnet Zedboard is compatible with these downloads?   In other words, if I own an Avnet Zedboard and I download and install the "Zynq" common images, will there be any problems in the future - are these 2020.2 images compatible with the Avnet Zedboard?  Or, should I download a package created by Avnet (or other company), that is, if one exists?

    None of those Vitis images at that Xilinx link will be compatible with the ZedBoard.  The ZC706 is the only one that is Zynq based, so you could download that to get an idea of what is required to create your own.  The folks at Digilent support the ZedBoard now, so you might try looking there to see if they have a Vitis image for that board.

    Thanks so much for your reply, Tom.    A simple, direct, answer was most welcome.

    Although I am going to look for a webpage.   Hopefully, someone can point me to a webpage, if one exists.

    Thank, again for your reply, much appreciated.

    Dear Tom;

         I was wondering if you could answer a quick question for me.   After reading some Xilinx literature that made reference to embedded "platforms"  I posed my question because I wanted Vitis 2020.2 to operate correctly.

         However, I don't know the reason why an embedded platform would be needed.    I am used to making my own designs in Vivado and then exporting them to Vitis.   Designs made in Vivado are native to your system.

         Can you, or anyone, tell me what advantage does downloading an embedded image serve?    Are these "pre-configured" application designs?

    My colleague drozwood90 can probably explain it better, but it is my understanding that the Vitis platforms like Xilinx provides at the link you mentioned, and that Avnet provides for our SOMs and SBCs at avnet.me/zedsupport, provide a known-good starting point for Vitis development based on a known-good underlying Vivado hardware design.  In a sense they are "pre-configured" application designs like you suggest.  They can be an extremely valuable starting point if you plan to continue development and further customize the platform if you are also using the same SOM or SBC.  If you plan to use a different board, like ZedBoard, the neither Avnet nor Xilinx provide a Vitis platform for, these other platforms can still be a valuable reference when building your own Vitis platform from scratch.

    Thank you, again, Tom for your great information.    My apologies for not getting back to you sooner.

    I recently installed Vitis 2020.2 for my Zedboard, natively running on Ubuntu as a dual boot O/S with O/S.    What a nightmare!

    Although, the dual boot is mutually exclusive, (you can't run 2 O/Ses side by side - simultaneously, like you can with a virtual machine),    I did not want to confront another layer of abstraction running on a virtual O/S.    The links you provided me to may become another nightmare  I just went through one that I don't ever have to live through again.    Getting Vitis to run correctly on Ubuntu was a nightmare enough.

    I am going to keep things simple and run Vitis 2020.2 and all my hardware natively, but, thank you anyway for the links.

    If you need any technical support about anything, I will be glad to help you.    I dabbled in just about everything.

    Thank again for the link it was appreciated.
