ZedBoard Hardware Design SFP Card for ZedBoard

SFP Card for ZedBoard

Hello,
I saw that Xilinx sells SFP FMC Cards for the ZC702 Board.
http://www.xilinx.com/products/boards_kits/fmc.htm#SERIAL

The ZC702 has the same SoC as your ZedBoard. So my question is:
Is it possible to design a SFP FMC Card by my own for the ZedBoard? Respectively, which ports do I have to use?

    The Zynq XC7Z020 device that is on the ZedBoard and the ZC702 board does not have any high speed transceivers, so neither would support a SFP FMC Card. While the SFP FMC (HPC) Card might physically fit onto the ZC702 FMC (LPC) connector I believe the table indicating the SFP FMC Card is compatible with the ZC702 is in error.

    Thank you for your quick response!

    If I would design a SFP FMC Card with a PHY on it like the MAX24287 (http://www.microsemi.com/documents/clock/ds/MAX24287_short_form_2012-08.pdf), it should work or not? This PHY has a RGMII Interface as output, so I think I can put it on nearly every FMC pin, is this correct?

    The Zynq device on the ZedBoard has two GigaBit Etherenet controllers in the Processing Subsystem. By default one of them is connected directly to the PHY on the ZedBoard via MIO pins using the RGMII interface. Assuming you want to keep this Ethernet interface you could connect the remaining controller to the Zynq Programmable Logic (PL) section via EMIO to a GMII interface that could then be connected to the FMC connector.

     

    If you want two Ethernet interfaces you would have to disable the MIO to RGMII interface to the on-board PHY and route it via EMIO to another GMII interface or implement a 'soft' GigaBit ethernet controller in the PL for the second port. It will be up to you to verify that you have enough connections available from the Zynq device to the FMC connector to accomplish this.
