can't find target device when FMC is connected

Former Member

I'm using zedboard and using HDL to do the design project, which means I only use the PL, not use the PS. I'm working on capturing data from external ADC, which is a Linear ADC demo board with FMC connector.
So after I generate the bitstream, and open a target. The vivado 14.4 can't find the device when the FMC is connected with the ADC board. When I remove the ADC board, the target device shows on vivado. And then I can program and download to it. Is that weird? Because on the Virtex7 board, this never happens. Need help!

The ZedBoard automatically adds the FMC to the JTAG chain when an FMC card is plugged into the board (via the FMC-PRSNT signal). You can see details in the ZedBoard HW Users Guide and schematic that you can download here: http://picozed.org/support/documentation/1521

You will need to add the FMC Card JTAG to your JTAG chain in Vivado for it to operate correctly.

    Hi, Gary,

Thanks very much! Can I ask you one more question? My clk doesn't work. I made a Time constraint and assign 100MHz, and then constraint clk pin to GCLK (Loc: Y9). But in the chipscope ila, the clk never works. clk is always 0. Is there anything I did wrong?

    Thanks,
    Shaodi

There should be a 100 MHz signal on GCLK (Y9 of the Zynq device). In your design you define an input port and assign it to Y9 in your constraints file (seems like you have done that) and connect it to something in your design. If that does not work you might want to check the output of IC 17 and verify that the oscillator is operating correctly.

    Hi,Gary,

Thanks for your help. But I'm still confused with the FMC. "ZedBoard automatically adds the FMC into the JTAG chain when an FMC card is plugged into the board via the FMC-PRSNT signal." Does that mean I need to force FMC-PRSNT signal logic 1? But how to do that? Because my ADC demo board (connected via FMC) doesn't offer signal output on that pin location.

Could you tell me how to find the IC 17? Is that a pin on the board so I can probe it on oscilloscope?

    Thanks,
    Shaodi

    Hello Shaodi,

Take a look at the schematic for the Zedboard available for download on this page: http://microzed.org/support/documentation/1521

The FMC-PRSNT signal is pulled up (not asserted) on the ZedBoard by default and is asserted by an FMC board pulling it low. If your FMC board does not pull the signal low then the JTAG chain will not include the FMC board. This circuit is shown on page 2 of the schematic.

IC 17 is physically on the bottom side of the ZedBoard PCB (page 9 on the schematic), but it may be difficult to probe the GCLK signal directly as many of the signals are routed on internal PCB traces. You may need to try to observe the GCLK signal by using ChipScope/Vivado Analyzer or 'forwarding' the signal to a pin connected to an output connector to observe with an oscilloscope. You can search on 'clock forwarding' or take a look at this post on the Xilinx community forums for an example: http://forums.xilinx.com/t5/General-Technical-Discussion/Clock-forwarding-in-Zynq/td-p/302783
