Configuring Zynq for SPI interface

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

I'm interested in Interfacing Zynq (through Zedboard) to peripheral slave devices via SPI. Since I have never worked on an SoC before and have limited knowledge in Linux, I'm finding it a bit tricky to implement a simple SPI link.

Here are my questions:

1. Which tool would be best to realize an SPI link?
2. Any IPs that can be used?
3. Do I have to use any PMODs?

I'm hoping this will get me started on Zynq.

There are two SPI controllers built into the Zynq PS (Processing Subsystem), one of which is usually used to interface to the QSPI Flash memory device on board. You can also add one or more axi quad SPI controller IP blocks into the Zynq PL (Programmable Logic) section. In either case you will probably want to connect the SPI device you want to communicate with to one of the ZedBoard PMOD connectors. There are lots of SPI based PMODs like these from Maxim:

    http://www.em.avnet.com/en-us/design/drc/Pages/Maxim-Pmod-Compatible-Plug-In-Peripheral-Modules.aspx

as well as newer ones from Maxim and others from Digilent: http://www.digilentinc.com/Products/Catalog.cfm?NavPath=2,401&Cat=9

Some of the listed PMODs are SPI interface and others are I2C or GPIO interfaces.

Maxim has some example projects on the ZedBoard community projects page as well: http://www.zedboard.org/projects/1521

Once you have added either the PS based or axi based SPI interface to your Zynq design and exported it to the SDK (Software Developement Kit) you can open the system.mss file and click on the 'examples' link to the right of the controller in the 'Peripheral Drivers' section for example code.

    Hello TroutChaser!
    I also need help with this. There's a thing I don't understand.
My aim is to make an example of reading/writing to/from SPI and I2C with Linux on Zedboard.
I'm using this tutorial for Linux:
    wiki.analog.com/resources/tools-software/linux-drivers/platforms/zynq
I can attach my Vivado project if needed.
How can I check that I can access SPI and I2C devices from Linux?

This post on the Xilinx community forum might be useful:
