Zuboard 1CG won't power up with SSD attached

I have a 1CG with the AES-ACC-HSIO-M2-G Rev 1.1 M.2 board. With the M.2 board connected, the 1CG powers up fine. With an NVMe SSD plugged into the M.2 board, the 1CG will not power up when the power button is pressed.

I've swapped out the power supply (45W USB-C), M.2 board and SSD with no luck. In probing the 1CG with a scope, it seems like the PowerGood signal drops once the SSD is installed. 

The next step is to swap the 1CG.

I've reviewed the projects described here and on hackster that use the M.2 board and have followed their setup steps to no avail. I've emailed Avnet support several times asking for schematics and other technical info on the M.2 board and have received no response. All of these projects use version 1.0 of the M.2 board.

Has anyone had success using an NVMe SSD on the 1.1 Version of the M.2 board? Any ideas on what the issue could be?

    Hi Steve-

    There are two connectors on the M.2 HSIO board. One is an M.2 E-Key connector intended for Wifi / BT modules. The other is a M.2 B-Key where you can input an SSD.

    There are two GTs associated with the M.2 B-Key so 2-lane SSDs are supported.

    On-board there is a PCIe REFERENCE CLOCK chip - DSC557-054444KI1. For the reference clock to be valid, ensure that J18 is open and not shunted.

    There is also a GT data lane mux on board the HSIO. Check jumper J19. In order to select the B-Key for the SSD you will need to shunt this header. Also, J20 is important. That is the enable for the MUX. In this case, J20 should be open and not shunted to ensure that MUX is functioning. 

    Aside from those items I will attach the snippet from the schematic for the HSIO connector pinout that would help you with a Vivado design targeting this platform.

    Lastly, please verify what SSD you are testing with? We tested with a Delkin MB1HFRCFD-80000-2 which is NVMe PCIe Gen3 x2 in an M.2 B+M Key format. We do not provide a SATA clock so you will need to ensure PCIe operation.

    Thanks for the info.

    We have the jumpers set as you specified (J19 shunted, J18 and J20 open). J4 and J17 are also shunted (by default and as shown in the Tom Curran WiFi, Bluetooth, NVMe SSD project on this site).

    We have tried both a Samsung 990 Pro (NVMe PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 B key) and a Patriot P300 (NVMe PCIe Gen3 x2 M.2 B key). Both of these *should* negotiate down to PCIe Gen3 x2. But just in case, we've ordered a PCIe Gen3 x2 M.2 B+M key (the Delkin you mentioned is now obsolete).

    The Vivado design is based on this hackster.io project. We used that project's PCIe settings and ignored the DP related settings. But does the Vivado configuration matter since the board doesn't even respond to the power button (SW7) when an SSD is installed?

    We have also tried a second 1CG with the same results.

    I'm curious if the x4 solutions are somehow tying a power pin to GND. Here is the M.2 connector pinned out on the HSIO board:

    Note: The M-Key is intended to support 4-lane solutions and not the B-Key.

    I asked Delkin to see if they have an updated part number for M.2 B-Key x2 lanes.

    I mis-typed above. Both drives we've tried are x4. We'll have the x2 B+M Key drive by Monday.

    BTW - Delkin responded back with a recommendation for the SSD replacement: MB1HFRCFD-80000-2

    We procured a KingSpec 256GB M.2 NVMe Gen3x2 and it is working. So it seems x2 is a requirement.
