Can I connect a fan (to power it) to USB 2.0 port of ZUBoard-1CG?

Hi, I am planning to develop an enclosure to the ZUBoard-1CG & would like to add a fan.

I want the fan to be powered ON as soon as the board gets the power through USB-C.

For this, I plan to use USB fan which draws less current & connect it to USB port of the ZUBoard-1CG

Can I connect?

Noctua NF-A4x10 5V

Amazon.com: Noctua NF-A4x10 5V PWM, Premium Quiet Fan with USB Power Adaptor Cable, 4-Pin, 5V Version (40x10mm, Brown) : Electronics

Input power (typical) 0.3 W

NF-A4x10 5V PWM: Specifications | Noctua

OR please let me know if there is some fan which is already tested with ZUBoard-1CG

Thanks,

Madhu

The USB 5V is powered with 900mA device. USb2.0 spec is 500mA. You can support a fan up to 2.5W.

I don't believe a FAN has been tested, but the USB2.0 port is powered with 5V that gets generated from +SINK_PWR and is sequenced with EN3 signal. Because it is sequenced, the board will need to powered-on before the fan will turn on, ie - simply plugging in USB-C may not power the fan. There is a mode where plugging-in USB-C is possible to power-on the board skipping the push-button. A resistor would need to be moved on the board. See the INIT signal on the power controller and the gray box.    This would allow the fan to turn on (and the board) when plugging in the USB C cable directly.                                                                               image

Hi iksevas Thanks for your reply

I am fine with the power sequence like -

    • Plug in USB -C to power the board (fan won't turn ON)
    • Press SW7, then board boots &
    • Fan will turn ON through USB 2.0
    • this is ok as my PYNQ Appl runs after the board boots (after SW7 is pressed)

Main question is can I power the fan from USB 2.0 of ZUBOARD 1CG?

What can be the max current that this fan is allowed to draw from USB 2.0?

    THANKS
