Hi Gizmo2 users! I bought a Gizmo2 a couple of months ago and all I've been doing so far is just testing it out. This community has been a great help. Especially in installing an OS and SSD.
Now one of the main reasons I purchased the Gizmo2 was because it is supposed to have support of OpenCL 1.2. I was hoping I could somehow make use of this feature, but it has proven difficult. I'm no expert on the subject of OpenCL, but from my understanding, you could use it to speed up / accelerate programs by offloading computations to the Gpu instead of having the cpu alone do it http://www.gizmosphere.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/GizmoOpenCLOpenCV.pdf.
My question is: How do I get the OpenCL to work on the Gizmo2? I've tried installing the Catalyst driver from AMD (which contains the OpenCL runtime) and tried to run some of the sdk samples, but I can't say I've experienced any real performance gain (in terms of speed) from using the OpenCL. Does anybody have this working? Are there special instructions to get OpenCL setup?
I've seen the post by lucie tozer "Gizmo on Fire" where she mentions that there is observed performance increase in the graphics by installing custom packages for the driver. Are graphics performance the ONLY benefit of this GPU? I was really hoping I could us the GPU to do general purpose computations (not for graphics) by using OpenCL. Would I have to install the driver a similar way lucie did? Do I have to use a specific OS?
It's been cited several times that Gizmo2 can achieve 85 GFLOPS performance. I would assume this is coming from the GPU. How? How can I reproduce that benchmark? I'm not sure if this benchmark is achieved with or without the presence of OpenCL.
Ultimately, I'd like to use OpenCL to accelerate OpenCV and be able to do some parallel processing, but so far I can't seem to get OpenCL to work as a standalone. Please help element14 gizmo2 users. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
