Problem with RIoTboard, strange characters on PuTTY, wrong resolution in TV by HDMI

Hi, I have a problem with my RIoTboard.

When I bought it, unpacked and connected to the TV via HDMI, this TV had the message "resolution not supported by the TV, change the resolution." When I connected to the UART and watched broadcast in PuTTY is displayed the strange characters I do not resemble logs. I thought that something is wrong with the pre-installed Android. I put the microSD card and installed the new Android on microSD card. After reconnecting still in PuTTY are strange characters and on TV the message at the wrong resolution.

During the installation of switches SW1 were in position 0111011, while the pre-installed Android 10110111 and 10100110 with a microSD card.

I was looking at different sides of similar information RIoTboard behavior, but no one had a similar problem as me.

Transmission parameters such as PuTTY I set in the manual (115200, 8, 1, N, N). I connected the adapter and directly to the hardware COM port. In both cases the effect was the same.

Screenshot of PuTTY.

How can I solve my problem, if I'm doing something badly, or maybe RIoTboard damaged?

Regards Marek

    Try changing you baud rate.

A lot of systems default to 9600

    Hi, DAB

After your message I tried to connect various terminals: PuTTY, Terminal and ZOC Terminal with different speeds and different configurations of the transfer. Every time strange characters.

Android installation on eMMC and SD card not jam up. Bad news, I have a problem with UART and Android. What should I do?

I also tried to install Ubuntu and surprise here, the UART does not work as before, but after installing the system starts on TV via HDMI.

Part of the problem solved, but what to do with UART?

Additional information may not be relevant, systems Android and Ubuntu downloaded from the e14 site.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Regards Marek

    Hi Marek,

What serial-to-USB device are you using? Do you have a model number or web link to it?

The serial comms is at a very low level (in dedicated hardware on the processor chip) so it is extremely likely you'll see the correct text assuming the  serial-USB device is

good and the comms parameters are correct.

Can you post a link or more detail on the serial-USB device?

I also tried to install Ubuntu and surprise here, the UART does not work as before,

after flashing ubuntu, did you change the boot switches (10110111) to boot from eMMC.

the debug uart text may not appear  in serial download mode.

can you cross check the boot switches,

    Hi shabaz

I use the adapter (Gembird) previously connected the other microcontrollers as atmega8 and it was OK.

I connected my RIoTboard with this adapter to USB or without adapter directly to a COM port on the other computer. In both cases the effect was the same.

The good news is that runs Ubuntu and I can connect to it via LAN.

    Hi tushar panda

I'm running the UART communication during installation and startup of the system. Unfortunetly, we still show up as strange characters on terminal like in the first post.

Before and after the installation, of couse, I switch the boot switches to the correct position.

What you´re using is NOT an UART connector. It´s a RS232 Connector.

DON´T connect it to the RiotBoard. It uses an absolutely different communications protocol.

You´ll need an UART connector like this: UART8000-U is a USB to serial debugging cable

I´m using one with a CP2102 Chip by the way.

You're right, I forgot because it was a long time ago that I connected atmega8 by MAX232 driver. Now I'm on vacation when I get back around 18th check it out and I confirm 100% if it works. Thank you for the tip.

    Hi Marek,

Otto is right. I had the same problem, getting the garbage, when I used my old serial to USB device. Then I used CP2102 ( USB to UART bridge controller) and it works.
