SABRE LITE Troubleshooting

The supplied SD card is just a demo, you won't see any output on your monitor until after the board has booted and the demo starts. All of the output prior to the demo is via the serial port.

The included single page instruction sheet doesn't make it clear that you need to connect your serial cable to the connector marked 'debug'.

It sounds as if your SD card isn't booting for some reason, but you'll need to sort out the problem with the serial console to work out why.

I'd start by re-checking everything:

• use a multimeter to check the PSU, preferably while it's connected to the board
• the serial cable is connected to J17 properly (right way round etc)
• the serial cable has not been damaged somehow since it is rather flimsy
• your terminal program is using the correct serial port for your usb adapter
• that it is indeed set to 115200,8,N,1 (garbage output is usually a sign of the speed being different at each end)
• both of the SW1 dip switches are off (i.e. they're switched towards the edge of the board, not towards the SoC).

You might also remove the SDCard - you'll still get output on the serial port as the u-boot bootloader is in flashrom on the board. Once you get the bootconsole working, then try with the SDcard to see if you get any errors.

Here's approximately what you should see on boot (note that I've truncated several hundred lines of kernel boot messages to avoid making the message too unreadable), it takes maybe up to a minute to boot and you won't see anything on the HDMI connected display until the very end, just after you see "Starting demo..".  The demo is simply a sales pitch for Timesys, a few powerpoint slides, not worth it IMHO other than to show that the board actually does boot.

I'm having trouble with the SABRE Lite board as well.  I can't seem to be able to get the demo image to come up through my HDMI connection.  Here's the data that I get when I boot without an SD card:

From those u-boot messages, it's not seeing any SD card, which is exactly what you'd expect when you boot without one

The board only has a tiny onboard memory that contains u-Boot.  All the installed u-Boot does is try to load and run 6q_bootscript from the first partition on an installed sd card. No SD card, and your log is as far as you'll ever get.

Put the SD card in and paste the boot log from trying to boot with it installed, there may be some useful information that'll help work out what's going wrong.

Note that the boot log I posted was from an SD card I received with my board back in December 2012, so it may not be the same as what they ship today.  I can't find the original in-box demo image available to download from e14 anymore, so no way to tell if there's been any significant changes.

Interesting.  I was expecting more.  My monitor comes up blank and based on this video, I was expecting that there would be something displayed on the screen.  So, I figured it was an issue with u-boot.

I realized that this uses the newer 6x_bootscript, so I went ahead and upgraded it using the instructions here:

This made the boot sequence look much better, but I still don't get any output on my HDMI monitor.  For what it's worth, I'm using a HDMI to DVI connector like the original question.  Anyway, here is the output over the serial connection:

Interesting.  I was expecting more.  My monitor comes up blank and based on this video, I was expecting that there would be something displayed on the screen.  So, I figured it was an issue with u-boot.

So, the image that I'm working with is this one here:

I realized that this uses the newer 6x_bootscript, so I went ahead and upgraded it using the instructions here:

This made the boot sequence look much better, but I still don't get any output on my HDMI monitor.  For what it's worth, I'm using a HDMI to DVI connector like the original question.  Anyway, here is the output over the serial connection:

I just tried connecting my board to an HDMI TV and it displayed just fine.  Looks like it is an issue with my connection to my monitor.

Can't really help you with android much as it's not what I use, but as that seems to be a recent version of the BD android image, perhaps pairing it with http://boundarydevices.com/u-boot-2013-10-release-2/ might get you better results ?

I have had success getting video output with passive hdmi-DVI adapters, so there's no real reason why it can't work.  I've had issues with android on other boards though, the monitor I use is 4:3 not widescreen and I've yet to see any android image that works properly with it, if at all. It really should be as simple as reading the DDC and setting up the screen, but from what I can tell a lot of the Android images assume some default widescreen mode and if that doesn't work you're fubar. Could something like that explain your problem ?

Generally during boot with u-boot you'll get nothing on screen, all output goes to the serial console. There may be exceptions to that, but I've not seen any yet.

The Boundary folks seem to be much more involved in the design & development of the Sabre-Lite than e14. Reading between the lines, it wouldn't surprise me if Freescale had contracted BD to design the board, but that's only supposition on my part. Regardless, the BD blog is by far the best resource for SL information, and they seem to be at the center of i.MX6 development generally, so it's very much worth watching what they're up to.

So, after playing with it for a couple of hours, I decided to buy a new monitor.  I deserved one anyway.
