This is a brilliant set of video tutorials. Very very clear and easy to follow, so thanks!

On tutorial 5 I found I got a 404 error trying to download gimp directly onto the pi. applying sudo apt-get install update seemed to apply the right patches / updates and i now have gimp but I don't properly understand why or what I'd done

Thnx for any advice or comments

    cheers

Bad form to get a new user into to using root via su. When I set up debian, I first install sudo and go in and edit the sudoers file. Only takes at most a minute or two and then you can sudo whenever you need superuser powers. Then you can start adding packages. Aptitude if it is included is a nice menued way to install packages. Much safer to use sudo on a naked system.

You can also use sudo apt-cache search pkgname from the command line to find programs.

This was really great!  I think I will be ready when my rpi arrives, thanks to you.  I installed the VirtualBox and even got flash working with the iceweasel browser.  If you could help explain how to get audio output to work from the VirtualBox, that would be awesome.  Thanks!

Nice intro to installing Debian, not one I've used before.

    Very minor niggles...

There was one msg dialog you may have skipped through without explaining.

Given your assumed audience is Windows, may be worth pointing out the distinction between the root prompt character and the non-root prompt character?

    Well done!

A very good start for a newby to Linux etc. At some point it might be useful to show how to generate a bootable SD card for the target hardware. I am awaiting my hardware with baited breath.
