Saving / moving projects into a new location

Squintz

I have created a bunch of projects which all live in their own folders under a "Projects" directory. This includes an integrated library project that is shared with multiple PCB projects. Now the the PCB projects are completed I want to move them out of our "Projects" directory into our "Final Docs" directory. However, I don't want everything to break when I do that. I'm a bit concerned because I was learning as I was making these PCBs and so I'm not confident everything was added to the schematics using a single integrated library. For all I know I could have 10 versions of the integrated library with each project using various versions.

What's the process for making sure that things don't break when you move them? I'm guessing I can't just drag and drop the entire project folder because history has taught me file path links will break and I'll end up with a bunch of messages telling me things can't be found. Do I open each project and save it to the new folder location? Are the integrated libraries I used included in each project or am I stuck with leaving it where it is currently saved? My fear is that I move or save the PCB projects to a new location and in 3 months from now when I need to make a change and I want to fork the project then everything will be a nightmare. How do I avoid the nightmare?

    Hi,

If you have put any graphics or pictures on your schematic you will want to make sure they are embedded and not just linked.  If you move things the links will be likely broken.  The alternative is to make sure that any linked graphics files are also included with the project folder.

But otherwise, you can simply zip compress the folder with the project and archive it.  I usually look at the history folder and clear out larger and older versions that I won't need to archive.

All parts from libraries on schematics and PCB are in the project.  They were pulled from libraries when you placed them.

After making the archive, it is a good idea to make a copy and unzip it and test that all goes smoothly or even better to have someone else you know do it to ensure you can recover the archive smoothly in the future.  That was a requirement for both hardware and firmware projects at the last company I worked for.

    Hi Squintz,

I move projects around all the time; provided the schematic, PCB and project files are in the same directory then there isn't a problem.  The libraries appear to use absolute paths, so provided you don't move them the linkages should be ok.  Changes to schematic and PCB libraries aren't automatically pushed into existing designs, so it's not typically a problem if a shared library is updated.  That said, I don't think I've used embedded graphics so that would be something to check if you're likely to use it.
