Create a library from an imported PCB design

jstrautman
jstrautman over 8 years ago

I have seen a video from Robert Feranec on youtube where he shows how you can "Make Integrated Library"  in Altium Designer.  I wanted to know if there is such a thing in Circuit Studio.

What I am trying to do is import a PCB design from a PADS format, which I have done successfully.  Then I would like to make a Library of the parts that are in that design so I can then start a new PCB and use those parts in it rather than modifying the original design file.

If anyone knows if this can be done in the limited Circuit Studio software I would appreciate knowing how!

    Hi,

I will see if I can get an answer from the developers.

    From the developers:

There isn't a specific command to Make a library because it is achieved in a different way in CircuitStudio.

Open the PCB and view the PCB panel.

Change the drop down list to Components

Make sure the Select checkbox is enabled.

Click on a component in the list and press Ctrl+A to select all

This will select all components on the board including any locked components (using the PCB Filter won't)

Move the mouse over the PCB and right click one of the selected components, choose Copy, then left click on the component.

Go to the Projects panel and open a PcbLib file, or right click the project to Add New To Project > PCB Library.

Open the PCB Library panel and right click in the Components area > Paste ### Components.

Make the PCB Library panel wide enough to see the entire Name of all the components and delete any with - DUPLICATE

(Maybe examine the duplicates before deleting in case you need to rename some if there are differences)

    Save the PcbLib file.

The PcbLib file can be used along with a SchLib file as files, or they can be compiled into an Integrated Library if required, but that's not usually necessary.

Using version 1.3 on a new install.  Can't seem to get a workflow for creating components effectively without creating a new schematic for every footprint copied to a new PcbLib.  There has got to be a better way.  Anyone with any input?

Using the workflow described above I can get a footprint copied to a PcbLib file easily.  What is problematic is the schematic.  I can't find a way to copy the schematic from the SchDoc associated with the project.  I have to create a new schematic library, then link the schematic to the PCBLib file which has the footprint.  Very time consuming.  It is really strange that component creation and editing is so much more complicated than Circuitmaker which is a free product.  What am I missing here?
