About variants

I'm trying to understand variants in CS.

 

I'm trying to achieve the following:

I created a full design with a micro-controller - now I want to exchange this micro-controller in a variant, which has a different pin mapping, but same footprint.

 

Question: Is it possible to create a variant with different routing or do I have to create a completely new PCB?

 

When I create the variant and try to exchange the component, the only two options presented are "Fitted" and "Not Fitted", but - according to docs (Variant Management | Online Documentation for Altium Products ) - there should be an "Alternate Part" option in the dialog.

 

Is there any tutorial on this topic? And yes - I already googled...

    Hi Martin. You've found the correct documentation page, the important phrase is "All variants share the same fabricated base board.", different routing is not a possibility as this would require a different PCB and not just changes to the assembly process.One possibility would be to design the PCB with both microprocessors and use variants to fit one or the other.
