Questions: board edge polygon clearance

Hello,

this might qualify as a newbie question: I have a PCB with a board cutout. On the top layer there is a polygon pour. After some trying to export it as Gerber file including shape AND cutouts, this works now.

On the edge of the cutout there is a clearance for the polygon pour, but not on the outer edge of the board.

1. How do I define the outer edge beside the "board shape" submenu ? If I copy the board shape to "multi layer" it works but this seems rather unusal.

2. How do I change the amount of clearance ? I tried "plane clearance" but it does not influence the polygon pour. IMHO it should be something in the "Manufactoring" part, but nothing there seems to fit.

Hi Henry. There can be some confusion over board outlines and keepouts as they are all separate things. When you define a board outline using Home | Board Shape this sets it up for 3D view but not for the Gerber manufacturing data. Typically you would copy the board outline to the Outline layer, you can use Home | Board Shape > Create Primitives from Board Shape to help with this and just move the primitives onto the Outline layer. Also you would create a copy of the board outline onto the Keepout layer, this is the layer that will act as a keepout barrier for all layers on the PCB. As well as preventing tracks routing too near to the edge of the board it allows a clearance to be defined for polygon pours. If you keepout was drawn as a line then the polygon to track clearance rule will provide the set back.

Impressive. The support quality alone is worth the cost of this software.

I tried the steps from above and it works as it should.

So in short: in preparation for production / polygon pour one should create the board outline via "Board Shape -> Create primitives" on the outline and the keepout layer.

    Thanks for the fast response.

Spot on. Remember that the Keepout layer affects all copper layers, you can also have layer specific keepouts as well by drawing a keepout object directly onto a layer (keepout is typically a tick box property that can be set on objects).
