CircuitStudio PC Hardware Requirements/Recommendations

I was a little dissappointed last night when I went to attempt a multi-route design. All of a sudden I was having stuttering graphics and general protection faults, and errors of various kinds. (Another un-named PCB Editor doesn't suffer from these ills, but others! I think its supposed to use OpenGL.)

I have a 16 GB System (12 GB useable) running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (Ver. 1803, Build 17134.165) on a AMD FX-8350 clocked at 4.29 GHz. For graphics I'm running a GeForce GTX 550 Ti with 1024 MB GDDR5 memory, 6118 MB of Shared memory. 7142 MB are listed as available for graphics. Graphics driver version is 391.35. DirectX 11.2. CUDA Cores: 192. Graphics Clock: 951 MHz. Processor Clock: 1903 MHz. Memory Data Rate: 4356 MHz. Memory Interface: 192-bit. Memory Bandwidth: 104.54 GB/s.

What is the graphics engine used by Altium? And, does any one have any idea if I should update/upgrade my system? What are the Hard Disk requirements (free space, swappable space, etc.)? Would it be better for me to run it on a 32-bit installation of Windows 10?

Aloha,

Thomas

I installed Windows 10 Pro 32-bit on a spare 500GB Hard drive and it appears to run just a bit better. But I went back to Windows 10 (64-bit) and seem to be doing better. haven't had a crash since. I'd still like to know if there is a 'sweet spot' with regards to Memory, Operating System, and Graphics (Processor and Memory). I've heard some people say they buy Gaming machine for PCB Layout, but the graphics aren't 'that' demanding! I'm looking for input, especially with regards to the graphics processor. But at this time I don't see my current card being taxed that much.

    Aloha,

    Thomas

The official documentation is here System Requirements | Online Documentation for Altium Products . However it isn't really that much help as Windows 10 is not listed and it only says DirectX 9.0c shader model 3 or later is required. I mainly run CS on Win 7 64-bit with integrated HD 520 graphics and it does seem to be pretty stable.

I too am using a moderate-power Win7 64-bit machine with a $50 graphics card (a small step up from the on-board graphics).  It must work fairly hard as I'm using a 4k display, but I can't fault the performance and the stability has been very good.
