Why are Digi-Key supplier links not working anymore

jaza_tom
jaza_tom over 7 years ago

Sometime in the last few weeks Digi-Key supplier links have stopped working in Circuit Studio.

Here is the error message that I get when I try and create a supplier link to a component using Digi-Key as the only enabled supplier:

I checked my settings in System Preferences --> Data Management --> Suppliers and noticed that there were some text entry dialogues for me to input sign-in credentials for Digi-Key, so I put in my credentials.  I should note that I have never input my credentials in the past and in the past Digi-Key supplier links were working.

I restarted CS after updating credentials but still no luck.

I uninstalled the Digi-Key supplier, restarted CS, reinstalled the Digi-Key supplier, restarted CS again, but still doesn't work.

Mouser seems to work.

An announcement about this was posted yesterday. Possible Digi-Key have gone and changed something but their support service is just saying contact Altium. A ticket has been raised with Altium to investigate.

All of my alternative suppliers have gone missing, leaving me with just Newark and Farnell. I reinstalled. No difference. I had a look in the registry editor and found 2 different structures relating to CS:

    image

The top one has a bunch of keys for the alternative suppliers:

While the lower one is missing those keys:

I made an attempt to copy related keys from one to the other, without success. I will appreciate any help on this problem, which may or may not be related to the OPs question.

You most likely have two sets of registry keys because each time you install a new copy of CircuitStudio it uses a different GUID string. During installation there is the option of which suppliers to support - you need to change the default settings if you need all suppliers.

From My Account > Extensions and Updates you should be able to configure the additional suppliers.

While switching suppliers is the easiest solution right now it's a bit unfair considering Digi-key isn't responsible for dropping the ball on this one.

Always interesting seeing lack of foresight from API creators.

Their API creators didn't anticipate that if it broke integration with third party software, then fewer people could order from them.

In other industries, APIs are either made backward compatible, or older ones are maintained, rather than create effort for their customers - some who are sometimes unwilling to upgrade for good reasons.

In fact, there are some protocols that will exchange new information, allowing for old systems to continue operating - like a self-documenting API. This solves the silly problem of having both sides operating at the same revision of an API.

I know this doesn't help you, but I still want to put it out there for those that can influence APIs in their solutions, that there is a better way.

While I agree it's definitely not ideal, it seems like a considered and planned move from Digi-key. The primary reason for a hard transition was cited as a security upgrade, which may have prevented seamless backwards compatibility.

There's an additional reason that it seems like simple oversight from Altium, and that's the fact that supplier search works perfectly find in Altium Designer (I just checked). This means Altium knew and made the required changes, but likely just forgot to push the change down to CS. I don't know exactly the code compatibility between CS and AD but considering lots of CS dialogs mistakenly refer to the program as Altium Designer I'm guessing they share a whole lot.

I don't know enough about Digi-key's changes to say if they did a good or bad job, but they probably thought their partners were all ready to go.

If I understand you correctly, you are suggesting re-installing and paying careful attention to options presented during the reinstallation. Is that correct?

No, this is for a separate issue. If suppliers are completely missing from your list this will add them. Digikey Links being broken is a separate issue.
