CS Crashes too often

Hi,
I'm new to CS, but I had the impression that it's the younger sibling of Altium (with which I'm familiar), offering fewer functionalities at a lower price point. Despite this, it's still quite usable. However, when using it at work, the program frequently crashes, approximately once per hour. I'm uncertain if this is an isolated issue or if others are experiencing similar problems. For comparison, I run KiCad on the same machine without encountering any issues, indicating that the machine has sufficient graphical computing power.

Here are the main issues I've encountered:

  1. The program consistently crashes when creating a polygon pour, either immediately after creating the mesh or when switching to the 3D view. During this time, the "Messaging: step_temp.setp" command appears approximately three times per second until the crash occurs.

  2. The program crashes upon closing. It doesn't shut down properly; after displaying the typical message asking whether to save changes, it crashes. I typically close the program using the task manager because there are no other viable options.

  3. The program crashes when importing an external project. Even when following the correct steps, including exporting in the 5.0 bin format, sometimes, upon opening the file, it crashes.

Given these issues, I'm curious if others have experienced similar problems and if anyone has found solutions. In the long term, a resolution is crucial because these bugs render the program unusable. With other viable alternatives available, it's only a matter of time before CS is surpassed by more stable options.

Thanks for any assistance.

Hi, you should raise a support request with Altium, since CS is paid software.

Altium staff member wrote the following article (and Altium staff don't seem to ever actively respond on this site at all, so for visibility you should also raise it on their forum at least, if not a formal support request).

Announcement: CircuitStudio will no longer be sold by Farnell. It is available direct from Altium.

Altium has not provided an update to CS for more than half a decade, so based on that track record you're unlikely to even get a minor bug update, but they might be able to troubleshoot your setup to make some suggestions on what you can do to modify your PC or setup to make it work.

I currently have both CircuitStudio and Altium Designer on my machine and have not been able to find any support for the CircuitStudio through Altium. I would like to know if anyone has gotten any help with CircuitStudio from Altium.

This sounds a lot like a machine problem. Either memory size, outdated CPU (for Circuit Studio) or video card.

Shabaz is right, you should reach out to Altium first. That being said, while you're waiting for a response, I'd recommend looking for any Windows or other driver updates. You may have to search for other update tools as well. If you have a pre-built PC from Dell, Lenovo, etc. It should have its own branded update tool. If you have a custom built PC, look for update tools from the component manufacturers.

Have you tried their forum and not got a response? https://auth.altium.com/?ReturnUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fforum.live.altium.com%2F%23%2Fforums%2F500000

That's the link that the Altium person stated should be used.

I cannot tell if that link will help or not, because I sent them a request to delete my Altium account after I read their latest privacy policy:

Altium Privacy Policy - worth reading

Eventually (two weeks later) their SVP of sales replied, not addressing the root of the problem (their awful privacy policy) which showed me precisely the level of customer-focus they have:

Yep and the resolutions that I found didn't work, we have two CS licenses and can not get either one to work on a new machine. Have also tried to get answers from my Altium rep who stated he knew nothing about CS.

Have had a bug with my current Altium designer and after weeks of troubleshooting with the Altium designer support I gave up as it is more of a nuisance and doesn't effect the performance that I can tell. Seems that there support has only 3 or 4 standard reply's - #1 reinstall Altium if that doesn't work #2 reinstall windows. No real troubleshooting that I have see so far.

I believe that they are now owned by Renesas so I'm hoping that they might straighten out the support.

My guess (not based on facts - just by knowing how both companies act on the market floor), Renesas is not one to look at CS. They're in it for the high-end products, and the integrations with marketspaces.
