Edit all selected objects?

frog
frog over 8 years ago

Hi,

In Protel 99 I used to edit all of the selected objects at once using something like (from memory):

select all objects that I want to edit

edit one of them and tick the 'global' box

set the selection criterion to 'selected'

do the actual edit

confirm that I'm going to change (n) items

Is there an equavalent in CS?  Specifically what I want to do today is to select a number of tracks and assign them all to a different net (they currently have no net assigned).

Thanks,

  Frog

I started using Protel 98 and we skipped 99 (it was pretty horrible if i remember right, lol!).  Somewhere around Protel 2001 or Altium 2001 they introduced the inspector panel.  Select the objects you want to edit, open the inspector panel on the side and if they're all of the same type objects (tracks for instance) you'll see all the editable parameters.  Use the pulldown on the "Net" line and assign them to the net you need it to be.  Is this what you were looking for, or did I misread your question?

Inspector panel is really powerful, but what CS is missing that full blown Altium has is "Find Similar Objects" which is a search feature that is super powerful.  I really wish CS had it.  You can kinda do a find similar objects using the PCB filter and PCB panels, but it's very limited to pads with similar hole sizes and a handful of other things.

Thanks Andy that does exactly what I need.

As an aside, I used Protel 99 for 15 years; it has it's quirks but served me well.  CS has many improvements but I see that the current autorouter has changed little (i.e. akin to throwing a plate of spaghetti at your monitor).

I tried to find some details about 99 that would spark my memory why we didn't like/use it...I believe that was the first year database "stuff" was introduced and it affected our design workflow and release process.  Seems like it was a fine process for one or two users, but when you have 20 people designing, it caused problems.

We held out for Altium 01 or whatever came out after 99 and I went out to San Diego to get some training all the new features sometime between 02 and 04...not sure.  From there, using ECOs to push changes through, etc. has stayed the same and just made sense.  But at the very beginning, it was a shake-up to understanding the workflow.  If they ever do another big overhaul, I'm gonna need to be trained again!!  Hopefully that doesn't happen when I'm too old to care about new software.  image

Glad I could help your select issue, have a great day!

    Andy
