Some overlay lines disappear when updating footprints

Hey guys

I've been trialing CS for a few weeks now - I have a bug I can't seem to find anyone else mention.

When I update a footprint in my PcbLib and push it to my PCB ("Update PCB with xxxx") the vertical or horizontal overlay lines may disappear. It's not just a rendering problem as the lines are not present in 3D view or on the Gerber outputs either.

How it appears on the PCB - note the lack of horizontal lines on the DIP8 component and also the lack of vertical lines on C1 also caused by the same bug.

This is effecting a lot of my components, but not all of them. E.g. C1 (pictured) is bad, but most of the other capacitors using the same footprint are OK.

Please advice if there is a workaround or bug fix planned or if you need further details.

Stewart

Hi Stewart. This is a new one to me. I wonder if it is pcb or library related. If you create a new project with a blank PCB and use these library parts do you still get the error?

I created a new Blank PCB Project.

Dropped in a couple of my DIP8 footprints - they were OK to start with:

Then I performed an "Update PCB with DIP8" and lost the lines:

If I undo the footprint update (ctrl + z) the lines come back.

Thanks for testing, interesting result. I would be more than happy to try and reproduce here if you would be willing to email through the library file with the DIP8 part. If I can reproduce then I can arrange for a ticket to be raised with Altium.

If you can provide or PM me your email I will send thought my library. So far it's happened with DIP8 as demo'd, TH resistors, TH capacitors and other square box components...

I'm also working on it on another computer. I just now lost some lines when I used "Import Changes From..." changing a few SMD footprints to TH. I guess it seems to happen when a footprint is being replace or updated?

I can attest to this, i've had simmular issues with some footprint (but not all)

Hi Ted, thanks for letting us know, I've updated Altium with the news that this isn't just a one off issue.

I am still dealing with this issue. I am not sure that it is always related to updating footprints, however. I have observed missing lines after having been nowhere near the libraries. Often it's just one out of many (30, 40+) instances of the same footprint.

I have found no way to fix it other than deleting the component and placing it again.

Possibly related, possibly not: Every time I attempt to place a free pad on Top Overlay it will disappear next time I open the file. Not just occasionally, every single time.

Hi Alan. The disappearing pads is a completely different thing. Pads must be placed on copper layers otherwise they will just vanish when starting routing or similar. If you need shapes on non-copper layers then just draw the shape rather than try using a pad.

    Thank you, Peter.

I have actually trained myself to do that, I just was not expecting the behavior. I came from Protel 99 and I always stuck pads in component footprints or just free as pin 1 markers and the like and never thought twice about it. Now I make a fat 1mil long trace to do the same. (I've also branched out into triangles, but I digress.)

Nonetheless, the disappearing line issue remains, and I haven't correlated it to any specific action I should avoid. I try to do a painstaking visual check as a last step before release, but I feel I should I should be concentrating on looking for dumb things I did, rather than things that were done to me.
