Hierarchic design - What document describes how to and global vs local net names

johnkimura

New to CS, where in documentation/help

Description of generating a hierarchical block

Storage location of the block design

re-use, i.e. loading from location the block

connection of block ports on outside to circuitry, pins on components and pins on other blocks

how many levels of blocks are supported

are tables spreadsheets available identifying all of the net names prior to connection outside of the block, and reference to local netnames of original block connecting to the top level

is it possible to define a bus inside of a block, link to outside by a bus port

how are connection net names identified within the block sheet and outside at the next higher level,

is it possible to see the net name within a block prior to the connection out side of the block via port

Entertaining using circuit studio for a 128 channel project, based on blocks groups both in schematic and pcb

Does circuit studio remember layout of a schematic block, for repetition, eliminating need to manually layout a multi instanced block

Altium 18 does the above, attempting to learn to what extent circuit studio accommodates.

Thanks

CS does not have reusable design blocks in the sense of a schematic block associated with a pre-designed PCB section that can be replicated any number of times. Hierarchy and repeated schematic blocks are supported (a block is simply a schematic sheet with the necessary connector elements). The big thing is that there is no automated way for you to lay out one channel on the PCB and replicate this up to 128 times, it would be a manual job. As such I would advise using AD18 for your design.

    Hey John,

Here is an ugly work around for channels from harvie256.

Toward the beginning of the video, Harvie mentions the repeat command and setting up schematic sheets and ports so that the repeat works as it would in AD.  It seems you could create reusable circuits using a generic project ("blocks.PrjPCB", perhaps) with a unique circuit on individual sheets.  Then I would think one could copy the sheet from the generic project to the current project (annotate, repeat, and follow the video above).  Keep in mind, your generic project library will need to be added to the new project too.  I hope this helps John and Grazie mille Harvie!

The following video might help understand the very basic concepts of a multi-sheet hierarchy, it is for an old version of CircuitStudio but still relevant.
