Linking schematic symbol to PCB footprint bug - edit pin list shows incorrect pin names

Create a footprint with pins named "1","2" and "3" etc

 

Then create a schematic symbol with pins names "P1", "P2", "P3" etc

 

Link the footprint model to the schematic symbol.  Click on the Edit Pins button in the Library Component Properties dialogue box.

 

The pin names for the footprint are incorrectly labelled "P1", "P2", and "P3" etc

 

If you assume CircuitStudio has correctly mapped the pins, you are wrong.  When you go to import the part into a PCB design document via ECO you will get error messages saying that there is no corresponding pin in the selected footprint.

    Thanks for the great post. I honestly don't think this is a bug more a misunderstanding of the information presented. To help inform others who might see this thread I have been through the process of recreating what you did and will describe the process.

     

    Create a footprint

    Footprints typically have pad names starting at 1 and follow the pin numbering sequence as shown in the device datasheet. Here's a very simple 5 pin header with pins numbers 1 to 5.

    Create a schematic symbol

    Note that each pin had both a name and designator, typically one would be the pin number (known as Designator) and the other a pin function name (known as Display Name).

    It is the pin number (Designator) that is used to tie up symbol pins to footprint pads. Bring up the component property dialog and add in the footprint just created.

    There are two very similar buttons. Edit Pins is designed to edit the symbol pins and it also shows the current mappings of symbol pins to footprint pins. Seeing entries in the mapping does not imply the footprint has a pad of that name - it is just showing that pad names that will be used when trying to match up with the footprint.

     

    The Edit button is used to assign symbol pins to footprint pads and a different mapping can be used for each footprint. The image below shows the edit button being used to assign symbol pins to footprint pads, the first two have already been changed to match what pads the footprint had to offer.

    Once the mapping is complete everything will work as expected.
