Print a Titleblock in PCB Assembly Drawings?

erix
erix over 7 years ago

Hello Folks!

Try this:

Create a new layer in the PCB and call it Title block.

Put some words and lines and stuff on that layer.

Preview the Assembly Drawing(s) - the new layer isn't there, not a surprise.

Select Print--> Page Setup --> Advanced...

Add the new layer to the list of layers to print.

Close the dialog box and reopen it.

The layer isn't there!

Select Default Prints... --> scroll up(!) to Assembly Outputs

Highlight Assembly Drawings and hit Configure...

Try adding the titleblock layer there.

Close and reopen - not there!

I believe I used to do this in Designer almost every other day - can't figure out how with CS...

Can anyone??

Thanks in advance!

Here's a layer list from a new blank PCB showing the default naming which might be helpful to people.

    CircuitStudio 1.5.1 on Win10 x64

No problem here, I just add a Mech layer (let's say 22), draw on it and it shows in the Assembly Drawings.

Just tested and seems to work okay for me with 1.5.1 on Win 7. It could be your output job configuration has got corrupt - try renaming the *.outjob file in the project folder and setting up your printout again.

Bringing this one up from the dead as I've spent at least 2 hours trying to print a titleblock on a mechanical layer. I've tried deleting the /outjob file and nothing changes. I'm running 1.5.2 FWIW...

The bottom line is that changes made in the dialog boxes are not saved! You can add layers to the PCB and Assembly prints till your fingers get numb and they will not print.

Have you renamed the layers? If so then try changing them back to the default (as in when a new PCB is started).

What is a default layer name? Mechanical 1, Mechanical 2, etc?? Let's try it!

This is a 2-layer board with one unplated through hole. The titleblock is on Mechanical 16, the board outline is on Mechanical 1.

    image

Let's make a PCB final print. Note the names of the layers that will print on each page.

    image

Looks good, let's print a PDF.

    image

It passed! However the resulting PDF does not have Mechanical 16. What happened to it? Let's check the dialog box again:

    image

Courtyard Bottom?!!? Where did that come from? There is no layer named Courtyard Bottom! Check out the tabs in the first image. The name doesn't show in any of the drop down boxes in the layers dialog box or any of the print dialog boxes.

Well..... let's make a composite print. Mechanical 16 is on there...

    image

Guess what happens? It doesn't print Mechanical 16 and when you go back into the dialog box Courtyard Bottom is back again.

    image

    SO! What is going on?

So after a few more hours of digging I see where "Courtyard Bottom" comes from: Mechanical 16 is mapped to that name in the Gerber Setup dialog box. Another undocumented setting that is also impossible to change.

So, logically, putting the title block on Mechanical 6, which is mapped to the name "Assembly Text Top" should enable it to show up in my assembly prints, right?

    image

Nope, you are wrong. It still doesn't show.

This is so frustrating. It has to be deliberate on Altium's part because an accidental bug wouldn't be so pervasively wrong. I am able to get the Mechanical 6 layer printed in my gerber files so at least my vendor can see all of my board specs but it would be nice to get it on a PDF so that my purchasing department knows what to order and what to receive.

Yet another workaround for crippled software...

As Marius suggested I moved the titleblock to Mechanical 22. This actually works! Thanks Marius.

Now, WHY does this work? And why isn't it documented anywhere?

I guess it is documented now....
