Altium Circuit Studio Development???

engineereddownunder
engineereddownunder over 6 years ago

My license for Circuit Studio has just come up for renewal, and after just double checking there has been next to no activity in the development world around Circuit Studio - is it worth renewing the license or is this product a dead duck? The last version release was in May last year with apologies for how little it contained and promises of a more major release later in the year - which never came, and which has been followed up by silence (as far as I can tell) from Altium... Thoughts? Anyone seen a recent roadmap for this software? I actually really like the software but don't want to pour money into something that is not being actively developed.

So I have been pushing for some more information from element14 and Altium and got a reply which sounds promising (from element14 APAC Technical): There's definitely a major CircuitStudio version coming…

Is there some way to contact them and join beta testing? From the conversation on alitum website they deny existence of CS beta and try to sell you Altium Designer:)

I think James Harriman is reading this topic (he 'liked' my previous post) and if they think that you have the required skills they will send you the NDA to sign. Perhaps you could write here why you think you could help and if the presentation will convince, then you may be invited to join.

Ah ok thanks, I followed James if he follows back, then I will be happy to provide a bit more details, but I used CS for couple of years now so I think certainly I could provide pretty good feedback:)

As far as I know the beta program has been by invitation, but you can contact James Harriman <james.harriman@altium.com> and ask.

A few moments ago i stumbled upon this article on the Altium website: https://resources.altium.com/p/coming-soon-altium-circuitmaker-pror

As a frequent CS user, and knowing what i know of Circuit Maker i'm not sure if this is news we should be happy about.

Can anybody from Altium please comment on this?

    - The original Circuit Maker is web based and targets a different group of users than CS

    - I like the fact that CS has no (forced) subscription

    - I like the fact that the program (and the files it creates) are stored locally (and not on the web)

    - I would love to have a lot of the bugs in v1.5.2 fixed

    Hi Ted,

I’m on the beta test program and therefore subject to an NDA so I can’t publish specifics but I don’t think you have much to worry about.  Possibly somebody at Altium will be able to give a more expansive response.

Yes, I think it is safe to say that the linked article has Altium's official statement and says "Altium CircuitStudio has been completely upgraded and renamed as Altium CircuitMaker Pro, with robust new features and a brand new User Interface"

Based on the beta test, this is an updated CircuitStudio.  If you reread the Altium announcement, it does seem to accurately reflect what we are seeing so far. Since they are aligning the code bases with AD, perhaps we will be getting more frequent updates and bug fixes.  It also mentions that the non-Pro version of CircuitMaker will still be around also.

    Hi Ted,

I can confirm that this is just a name change, so while it's using the CircuitMaker brand, it isn't forcing you to save your projects or components onto the web like is the case for the free version. Online subscription sign-in features are treated as optional, so for example you may retrieve components or supplier information from an online location, but you're not forced to do this since you can design PCB's with local libraries completely offline.

CircuitMaker Pro 2 is a continuation of CircuitStudio, so you'll still be able to save files locally, and it will still be a perpetual product with maintenance subscription, and still targets the same segment of users, i.e. for the professional making of electronic products.

    Best regards,

    James Harriman

    Yes. It seems so :

    https://resources.altium.com/p/coming-soon-altium-circuitmaker-pror

Altium will continue to support existing Altium CircuitStudio customers; current users who are on a valid subscription will have the option to upgrade to Altium CircuitMaker Pro at no additional cost after the Beta cycle is successfully completed.

    Hi Mark,

Correct, provided you're on current subscription (which you are), the update is included, just like it's the next version of CircuitStudio. The product name has changed, but the subscription continues on uninterrupted.

    Best regards,

    James Harriman

Although for the avoidance of doubt it should be pointed out that a perpetual licence is not a subscription, if I understand correctly.

    Hi Frog,

Correct. The perpetual license means that it keeps working even without subscription, and you can even reinstall that build, and older builds, on another computer after the subscription has run out. But you can't install or use newer builds than the date of your subscription expiration. Subscription-specific features such as cloud services don't work out of subscription.

    Best regards,

    James Harriman
