How to transfer a license to a new computer

Background

Moving an existing license may be required in a few different circumstances:

  • Existing computer dies and a new one is provided
  • New computer supplied to replace existing computer
  • A hard disk failure occurs and the disk is replaced
  • The operating system is reinstalled or upgraded
  • The computer was stolen / lost / damaged and a replacement has been provided

There are a few different scenarios that may apply depending on the type of license being used and if the maintenance subscription was current. In the how to's below Primary Computer is your main computer where you sign in to use the software and Secondary Computer is another computer used by use that is licensed using a standalone license file (*.alf). In all cases it is assumed the original installation of the software will never be used again.

Primary Computer - Current Maintenance Subscription

  • Install CircuitStudio (the latest version is available from https://www.altium.com/circuitstudio/download)
  • Sign in using the same email/password as previously used
  • Visit the license page (View | Start; My Account > Licenses)
  • Select your license and then click Activate/Reactivate
  • There may be a warning dialog about reusing the license - just accept (Yes/OK) and proceed
  • The transfer is now complete

Primary Computer - Expired Maintenance Subscription

The procedure is the same as above with the exception that a version of the software compatible with your license must be installed. Once a maintenance subscription expires the license continues to work but cannot be used with newer versions of software. If you try with a version that was released after expiry of the maintenance subscription you will see an error indicating you are not using a valid license. Older versions of software are available on request - please email software@element14.com stating the version of software required or the maintenance expiry date. Once you have installed the correct software follow the above procedure. As an alternative to requesting older software you can purchase a maintenance subscriptionpurchase a maintenance subscription renewal to allow use of the latest software.

Secondary Computer - Current Maintenance Subscription

  • Install CircuitStudio (the latest version is available from https://www.altium.com/circuitstudio/download)
  • Use Add Standalone License button to add back your license file (*.alf)

If you do not have a copy of your license file this can be regenerated from your primary computer.

  • Visit the license page (View | Start; My Account > Licenses)
  • Select your license and then click Export Standalone License

Secondary Computer - Expired Maintenance Subscription

The procedure is the same as above with the exception that a version of the software compatible with your license must be installed. Once a maintenance subscription expires the license continues to work but cannot be used with newer versions of software. If you try with a version that was released after expiry of the maintenance subscription you will see an error indicating you are not using a valid license. Older versions of software are available on request - please email software@element14.com stating the version of software required (the same as running on your Primary Computer). Once you have installed the correct software follow the above procedure. As an alternative to requesting older software you can purchase a maintenance subscriptionpurchase a maintenance subscription renewal to allow use of the latest software (on both Primary and Secondary computers).
