Maxim's latest WLED driver allows PWM control of the boost voltage to extend power efficiency and battery life in portable applications.
SUNNYVALE, CA—March 30, 2010—Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX6948B, a high-efficiency WLED driver with an integrated boost converter and five GPIO ports that can be used to drive LEDs (powered from an alternate power supply) in parallel. Capable of driving up to six LEDs in series, the boost converter allows PWM control of the boost voltage to maximize power efficiency. The I²C-programmable, 10-bit PWM signal enables 1024 levels of WLED intensity, thus providing precise control over display brightness. These power-saving features make the MAX6948B an ideal backlighting solution for portable applications in which battery life is critical.
To save space, the boost converter features a 2MHz switching frequency to minimize the size and cost of external components. It can supply up to 30mA of load current under all conditions. Additionally, the five GPIO ports can function as extra logic ports or as constant-current sink drivers. Capable of accurate current control on parallel LEDs, they feature multiple levels of constant-current drive and are PWM programmable. The ports are ESD protected up to ±8kV HBM to eliminate the need for external ESD-protection circuitry.
The MAX6948B is fully specified over the -40°C to +105°C temperature range. It is available in 25-bump WLP (wafer-level package). Prices start at $1.70 (1000-up, FOB USA).
