Applications of the CP-CANFD Adapters

Introduction

The renowned CAN (Controller Area Network) Bus was originally designed to address requirements for automotive applications, bringing reliability, high speed, multi-master capabilities, and simplified wiring, amongst other important benefits. However, it has been adopted by a wide range of other industries whose requirements align closely with these features. The CAN protocol has also evolved to meet the greater demands of today’s applications. For example, CAN FD (CAN Flexible Data Rate) offers much higher performance and flexibility whilst remaining backward compatible with the Classical CAN Bus.

Some of the many applications of the CP-CANFD

Connecting CAN to Computers

Whilst CAN and CAN FD are primarily used to network a series of ECUs (Electronic Control Units) and other MCU-based (Microcontroller) modules, interfacing them to a computer is often required for tasks such as:

  • Development, Test and Debug of components and modules
  • Monitoring of industrial systems and buildings
  • Controlling devices via a computer-based user interface
  • Configuration, Diagnostics and Firmware Updates

Challenges in Selecting an Interface

There are several challenges in finding the right interface solution for the application, including:

  • Support for CAN Protocols used in the application now and in future
  • Robust Hardware Features for a long-term reliable operation
  • Extensive Software Support ensuring application requirements can be met

CP-CANFD Adapters

The CP-CANFD USB to CAN/CAN FD adapters have a range of features which address these challenges including:

Support for CAN Protocols

Support for both CAN FD and Classical CAN

The CP-CANFD communicates with both CAN and CAN FD nodes on the same bus seamlessly. This is a significant benefit for development of systems or components for Automotive and EV (Electric Vehicle) applications, where a combination of CAN and CAN FD nodes reside on the same bus. The Hi-Speed USB connection to the computer also avoids common concerns about throughput.

Dual Channel Versions

USB to CAN interfaces are a very useful tool when designing and validating devices which use CAN and CAN FD. This includes development of Integrated Circuits and MCUs, hardware modules and the associated firmware. One channel of the CP-CANFD can act as a CAN node to exercise the Device Under Test and the other channel to capture bus data in Listen-Only mode.

Robust Hardware Features

Galvanic Isolation

Applications such as factory and building automation involve high-power machines and systems connected to different mains power sources. Galvanic isolation in the isolated versions of the CP-CANFD (with part number ending in -ISO) provides a protective barrier between the CAN and USB ports, preventing spikes, surges and ground loops from damaging the computer. Additional surge protection helps protect the CP-CANFD itself from spikes on the CAN Bus. These features are also invaluable for R&D and testing purposes where a connection error or fault in a connected CAN device could result in damage to the computer.

Compact Unit with USB Connection

The CP-CANFD is supplied in a robust industrial grade enclosure. Mounting ears provide secure mounting in fixed applications. The compact and lightweight unit, powered entirely over USB, is ideal for diagnostics and firmware updates in the field.

Extensive Software Support

Ready-To-Use Software

Software is an important factor in the useability and functionality of a USB to CAN solution. The CP-CANFD includes the ready-to-use CP-CANFD Utility as well as support for popular 3rd party applications such as Busmaster. The driver of CP-CANFD can be easily installed on computers running Windows 7 to 11, Windows Server and Linux, with Linux SocketCAN (SLCAN) support.

Software Development

By providing libraries in various programming languages and control via the CP-CANFD's Virtual COM Port (VCP), it offers a wealth of options for developing custom control software and user interfaces. This flexibility also allows users to implement additional layers on top of the CAN protocol, such as ARINC 825 for aerospace applications.

Find Out More

CAN continues to be one of the go-to protocols for a wide range of applications which require reliable communications, even more so with the introduction of enhanced versions such as CAN FD. The essential role that computers play in developing, configuring, monitoring and controlling CAN and CAN FD devices demands an effective interface between the computer and CAN Bus.

With their comprehensive hardware features and software support, the new CP-CANFD adapters offer an easy to use solution for flexible and reliable USB to CAN/CAN FD interfacing across a wide range of applications.
