Being the most fundamental equipment for RF power measurement, power meters and power sensors are widely adopted over a broad range of applications such as R&D, manufacturing, installation and maintenance. RF power sensors are very reliable and rugged. Yet, year after year, a significant number of power sensors are damaged due to lack of precautionary measures and knowledge of proper usage.
One of the primary causes of power sensor damage is not heeding the warning label on the power sensor. Even if the sensor is not rendered completely unusable as a result of the stress, its accuracy in future measurements may be affected. Another subject of concern is the sensor RF connector and other connectors and adapters they might be connected to because one bad connector can ruin a good connector. And a bad connection leads to inaccurate measurements. Not to be left out is grounding, without which harm may come to the equipment; or worse, the operator. Considering that the power sensor is a static-electricity-sensitive device, there are some basic dos and don’ts to observe to prevent ESD related damages. Meanwhile, humidity is often overlooked even though it is actually a significant environmental factor in ESD.
