Small DVD Player blown IC chip

Hello,

 

I am looking for a replacement chip for a DVD player that has blown.  I can read on the label 4953 on the first line and (triangle)9F4H on the second line.  I have looked at other ICs on the board and found the triangle in the same spot and the manufacturer is ATMEL.

Where would be the best place to start to find a replacement chip for this device?

Would it be worth the effort since the device cost me $120 to buy brand new?

  • Frankly, it might be better to simply get a new DVD player and use the blown unit for parts.

     

    I was not able to find any relevant information using the data that you gave. These might be industry standard markings or can be specific proprietary markings.

     

    If the chip is by ATMEL,we have to consider the possibility that it might be a programmable chip. If this is the case then you would also need the programming, not just the chip.

     

    If the chip blew then we have to consider that something else might be wrong with the unit, so even if the chip is replaceable, the original problem with the unit might cause the new chip to also blow.

     

    The pic that you provided shows damage to the PCB. Care must be taken to insure that the pcb is not damaged internally. PS: Can I show the pic to my A+ study group? :-)

     

    Of course, it would help if you could get the schematics to the DVD player, something that may or may not be available from the device's manufacturer. By studying the schematics you might be able to deduce the chip's function. Being a DVD player, it might have to do with the DVD's encryption of the content (just a guess here)

     

    As you can see, there are factors to consider when it comes time to decide whether a repair attempt is made or a new unit is bought. HTH! Salvador
