Digital Power Conversion Workshops from Microchip & Farnell Coming to the UK in October 2010 |
Microchip and Farnell are running a series of three workshops focussing upon Digital Power Conversion during October 2010. Attendees to the main full day PWR3201 workshop, taking place on 7th October, may benefit from attending two half day classes on Oct 6th that provide background information on Digital Power Conversion and the dsPIC architecture. Class PWR3201 “Implementation of Digital Control Techniques for Power Converters using dsPIC SMPS Family” elaborates some standard control techniques used in converter designs. A propaedeutic review of the basics of control theory, is the background on which the various digital converters loops are built on. A short review of the basic theory of PID (Proportional Integral Derivative Controllers) precedes its implementation into a dsPIC; memory use and DSP core functionalities are key to the required speed and precision of computations. The buck converter on the PICtailTM Buck Boost Board is used to implement voltage mode, average current mode and peak current mode control loops. The code and execution flow for each of these modes is analyzed. The availability of two buck converters on the board allows to introduce the concept of a multiphase converter and how to efficiently control it. Moreover soft start and sequencing are implemented and used to control the switch on and off transients of the converter outputs. The class utilizes Microchip’s new dsPIC33F ‘GS’ Series DSCs provide on-chip peripherals including high-speed Pulse-Width-Modulators (PWMs), ADCs and analog comparators, specifically designed for high performance, digital power supplies. The powerful dsPIC33F ‘GS’ series is specifically aimed at power control applications and can be configured for a variety of topologies, giving power-supply designers the complete freedom to optimize for specific product applications. Multiple independent power control channels enable an unprecedented number of completely independent digital control loops.
