Digital Xenon HID Light Ballast

image
  • Cost reduction / Fewer Components
  • Improve lamp life, color property and Lumen maintenance
  • High Efficience - Quasi Resonant DC/DC
  • Flexibility - Topology, protection, Algorithm
  • Small size - smaller transformer, fewer components

In this lighting application the dsPIC SMPS device is performing multiple functions in the High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting module replacing multiple devices with a single digital controller. The Ballast operates as the power supply for the HID lamp. The Basic operation is to provide proper starting voltage and current to initiate arc and provide operating voltage and current to sustain the arc. It also provides feature to improve lamp performance, Lumen maintenance, Efficacy, Color quality and control, and eliminate flickering and audible noise. Using programmable digital power conversion technology provided by the dsPIC SMPS devices this design provides the benefits above over more traditional analog or hardwired designs. Common applications include Automotive Headlight, Projector Lamps, and Retail Lighting fixtures.

Implementing advanced software digital control loops for lighting applications requires a high-performance DSP engine along with specialized peripherals. The high-performance CPU and rich peripherals of the dsPIC DSC devices enable solutions that do not require much in the way of external support chips. In addition to the space and cost-saving benefits found in the dsPIC DSC solutions, special features enable advanced power conversion

These devices include peripherals specifically designed for digital lighting applications. Peripherals such as a high speed PWM, ADC and analog comparators can be tied together using an internal configurable control fabric that enables them to interact directly with one another, resulting in stunning performance gains in digital power applications.
