Freescale and Bluetechnix competition

Freescale and Bluetechnix have asked me to run a competition with three Bluetechnix SBC-iMX51 boards as prizes. I've posted the main specs of the board below, and if you need more information I've also linked the datasheet. All you have to do is tell us what you'd use the board for if you won. After the event I'll include the answers in one or more polls and you can vote for the best ideas. Winners of the poll(s) get the boards

You have until May 3rd to get your entry in

SBC-I.MX51SBC-I.MX51

The Single-Board Computer SBC-I.MX51SBC-I.MX51 is based on Freescale’s high-performance i.MX51 mobile platform, incorporating

an ARM Cortex-A8 CPU, an Image Processing Unit (IPUv3EX), a Video Processing Unit (VPU) and a Graphical Processing Unit

(GPU). The IPUv3EX provides comprehensive support for connectivity to displays and cameras. The VPU supports hardware

encoding and decoding of MPEG-4, H.263, H.264 and many more standards. The GPU serves 3D and 2Dacceleration in

hardware. The board‘s memory capabilities (NAND Flash, DDR2) and numerous interfaces like Ethernet, HDMI,4xUSB

and USB-OTG turn the SBC-I.MX51SBC-I.MX51 into the ultimate development board for future high-end embedded devices.

Its still May 3rd, I swears it! Just a little slow on picking a plan! image

I'd implement the base station for my ongoing wireless sensor network project. Rather than limiting the controls to a few manual switches, I would make the controls software based (most likely by command line initially). The base station comments to the sensor nodes via a XBee module and has local sensing capabilities over I2C and the ADC. The ethernet capabilities could then be used along with a basic server to publish and grab sensor data to a service such as Pachube. Implementing a basic web server would also allow the device to operate without an attached LCD if needed. The remaining "power" of the board would allow the user to manage their other services through the web browser or simply use it as a media device when not monitoring the sensor network (Multitasking anyone?)

Future developments could include integrating a touchscreen for greater easy of use, and a battery supply to allow on the move use (USB Wifi adapter if you need it, or something else).

Perhaps not the best written out idea, but its a start!

Posted at 03-May-2011 23:28..You couldn't have cut that much finer John!

    OK, no more entries

Thanks to the ten who applied, some really great ideas in there.

I'm going to set up the poll sometime today. I was going to lock the discussion, but I will leave it open in case anyone has any questions for the entrants.

If anyone uses this board for data acquisition, specifically with National Instruments Labview or USB devices, I'd like to know the results.  I have an application that is currently using a Zotac Ion mini-ITX motherboard, but it's still rather large and heavy for what I want to do.  Power use would be interesting to know also.

And we now have winners for this. Najath, Firat and Lahcen.

Great effort guys. and 70 votes was excellent. I've had the tracking number from Bluetechnix today, and the boards will be with me soon. When I receive them I'll get them straight out.

    Thanks again for entering!
